I've got a wireless modem (Wanadoo/Inventel livebox) to which I have 2 PCs connected by cable and a PC connected by wireless (USB) adapter. I've got a laptop without built-in wireless that I can use with the USB thingy but I want to get something a bit better.

I have seen wireless adapters that fit in the card slot (PCMIA?) and so don't hang out of the body of the laptop - a much neater approach; Question is which type to get? I believe it is 802.11? but there seems to be different versions; a, b, g etc, with claims that some have better range than others. Anyone got any advice as to which might have the best range as I'm currently struggling to get a signal in some rooms.

Thanks for any advice.

Your livebox won't support .a so don't worry about that one .b and .g are natively supported by livebox. The g is roughly 5 times faster than the b, .n is now becoming popular but not supported by livebox yet IIRC.

HTH and not dumbed down to much.

I used to have a Netgear WG511T PCMCIA card. Recently flogged it to a friend as my new laptop has it built in.

Great card, always connected at 108Mbps to my Netgear router.

Bear in mind I bought my card to "match" my router, but the Netgear never let me down. Never ran hot either.

HTH,

Exceptionally good advice. Especially if your buying something that isn't 'standard' such as Super-G or pre-N equipment.
