On the M6 yesterday, somewhere around Carlisle I spotted on a bridge (I think possibly a train line) a lot of strange sensors/camera's/illuminators pointed at the traffic lanes, anyone any idea what they are?

Before anyone asks they were not any of the standard traffic jam monitoring systems, next time I am up that way I will try to get a picture. I have looked on some of the speedtrap sites and they are different from anything pictured.

Too much to hope that they are numpty detectors.

3 points and a fine for sitting in an empty middle lane or not using indicators (ever)

Richard, I know those cameras/sensors you are referring to. There are some on the gantry over the M62 on the way to Liverpool and also some on the westbound M60 before Barton Bridge. I am, like you, unsure as to what their purpose is - but I get the impression that they have something to do with registration plate recognition for 'security' purposes. I'd like to knoe for sure as much as you!

do they look like a pair of binoculars on a blue pole with sort of wrought iron looking pieces under the cross bar? I've noticed one of these on the A14/Milton junction and came over with an irrational urge to throw a brick at it

What surprised me was that there were several different types of sensor fitted to this bridge, some looked like infra-red illuminator’s, some that could have been an optical sensor of some kind and three metallic flat sensor’s (thermal?), I only got a very quick look and so may be wrong on the details.

Their purpose may be quite benign but it would be interesting to know what they are.

Easy - these are called SPECS. They grab your number plate, and note the time you go past.... then somewhere up the road (a few miles away) they see what time you come out the other end.

If you hit the 2nd one under a certain time - you've had an illegal average speed. That's the trick, they do not measure speed by themselved, but only calculate at the end of a measured distance. Thousands of people are now being caught by this...

If you go past 1st camera @ 100, then in order to be safe recommend you drop speed pretty quickly to (say) 50mph, and stick to that until you see the second one,.

How to tell if it's Specs ? - Single camera with 2 "lights" either side. Points at you. Usually in lanes 2 and 3

Can only hope Steve Darnell is wrong about them being SPECs.

Would be interested to find out exactly where. I'm regularly in that area.

SPECS, like the London CONgestion tax, reads the front number plate. So for the time being motorbike are immune.

By the looks of it I'd say Steve was replying to apache's post. Yup, the things on the A14 are SPECS. Dunno about the ones on the M6 though.

I know exactly what SPECS look like and they are NOT SPECS!

There are a lot of sensors, I am sure that they are not home office approved speed detectors as they do not look anything like any that are listed on any of the speedtrap type websites.

Could be 'experimental', could be something else, lot more sensors than required for number plate recognition alone.

If they were being used for speed prosecution/persecution then we would have heard of these detectors a long time ago.

Came up the M6 to Carlisle yesterday (factory visit trip to Blackpool, thanks Lisa), there are a series of markings on the road (like after a Gatso) normally after a bridge but no sign of a camera unless it was on the bridge. 14 very puzzled/worried people.

Done for "scare" value to make you think youre being monitored everywhere...im sure there must be a law against this type of state sponsored harrasment?
Surely putting people in "fear" even while theyre doing nothing wrong is in itself illegal?
Maybe madcop could comment?

There are several places on the M6 where GATSOs were placed during roadworks. However, the white lines remain even after the cameras have been removed.

I know exactly what Richard is describing - I've seen them myself and often wondered what they are. Thing is, they are always mounted on bridges and operate over each and every lane. They are not Traffic Master either before anyone suggests it. I'm baffled and would like to know.

As suggested earlier, they could be Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras. Here's just one firm in on the act www.goldenriver.com

if they look like cctv cams, lots of them, in a row, then they've been there for years on a bridge just over the border into england on the M6 - I went under the bridge with the front wheels locked up in a fit of panic in my orion when I was 17! didn't hear anything though - lucky as I was travelling swiftly - at night - caught the reflection. according to an MP friend of mine (no names )they are there to monitor traffic much the same as the ones on tall poles on the bigger Mways

We have specs here in Nottingham, can't mistake them once you have seen them.

We also have forward facing truvelos but with gatso road markings behind them. Now what the f**ks that all about if it's not to scare numpties into doing 20 mph. This stuff is really irritating me. We need action!
