I started reading Practical Performance Car recently (it's like 'Max Power' for grown ups), which has some very interesting articles about all things car related and is quite educating for the mechanically shy.

In the readers pages one of the Tech Talk panel recommended that an owner switch to Tesco 99 Premium Petrol to overcome a pinking problem, quoting a test by a company called Thorney Motorsport. The test report is available on their website and is an interesting read:

Worth a look, and worth a couple of extra quid next fill up if there's a Tesco nearby maybe, especially if your engine is prone to pinking?

Interresting piece of reading, confirms indeed what many of us already thought. Shame the ignition of the standard Griffith doesn't advance when 99 octane is detected.

I don't know about pinking or my ecu..

BUT my griff really likes the stuff, noticably 'smoother' and feels more responsive.

I usually put in bp 97

The Tesco 99 made my 99 Griff 500 rattle like a can of marbles when accelerating hard. Obviously all cars are slightly different and set up and other variations have to be taken into account but having tried a number of combinations of fuel due to Shell being on the other side of town to me I now travel to the other side of town to get the grunt from V power.
