I have a limited company & I an wanting to change its trading name.

I own '***** Pipework Services Limited', but '***** Limited' has become available due to the company being dissolved. Same first word but obviously just looks better (IMO).

How do I change the name ? Do I basically just buy a new Limited Company package (for around £20) or do I need to do something else ?

Thanks.

Most Limited Companies use their "proper" Companies House registered name as a "Trade Name". In other words, if they are called ABC Ltd, that is what they use on their invoices, stationery etc.

However, like an individual, a company can use a trade name different to its "proper" name - such as ABC Ltd Trading As "XYZ Solutions". There is no formal procedure required to do this, although if you tried to use a trade name similar to another business you could be blocked by the other trader raising an injunction against you using that particular name.

If you want to change the actual Companies House registered name of your existing company,i.e you might want to change ABC Limited to XYZ Limited, then you would have to pass a Special Resolution at a meeting of the shareholders of the company and file that Special Resolution at Companies House. If the new Limited Company name is too similar to one that is already registered at Companies House, the new name will not be allowed. Obviously, it makes sense to check at Companies House first to see what names might be avaialble, before all the tedious procedures are commenced.

Thanks for that.

I registered a new limited co with the new name & will leave it dormant (so to speak) until I decide at what point to change it over.

This way no-one can get it.
