Camcorder advice

Hi everybody, im looking for a new camcorder but not sure which so need a bit of advice. Which format is the easiest to use i.e. editing, price up to £400 but cheaper would be nice, doesnt need to be hd but good enough to make dvds to show on a normal tv and nice simple controls.
As you can probably tell I am completly new to this so any advice at all would be helpfull. I have been thinking about jvc hdd cameras are these good, there doesnt seem to be a lot of choice of manufacturers when it comes to hard disc cameras why?.
