ACF - 50 New product in fight against salt corrosion..
Discussion
Hi
Just been talking to a keen motorcycling friend of mine who likes to use his bike all year long including the winter when the roads are gritted.
He is singing his praises for a new product ACF-50, comes in 13oz aerosol for around 12 pounds. He used it last winter when he got some from a pilot friend. He was amazed atthe protection it gave his bike over last winter and is applying it again this winter.
It was originally developed to protect aircraft from existing and new corrosion and is approved for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Great for protecting suspension and engine parts over winter. It's standard equipment for protection of US Navy jets, etc.
When applied it will form an active ultra-thin clear film that will kill any existing corrosion cells and protect against new corrosion forming. It can also be used on electrical systems and electronic components.
It is claimed to have the ability to chemically neutralise road salt and water beads on contact before rolling off.
Apparently it's now available in good motorcycle outlets so I'm going to give it a trial over winter on my TVR.
Anybody on here used it yet?

Hi
I keep it in my collection in the UK but yes I must get some good photos next time the sun comes out. Problem is that when the weather's good I go driving - in fact even when the weather's not so good I still go driving. Hence my interest in products such as ACF - 50.
Getting back to the topic - has anyone any experience of ACF - 50?

No experience yet, but it looks like a good product if the write ups are anything to go by! If it works, we should create a sheep dip full of the stuff and drop the cars into it...
Will buy some and give it a crack - my Chim lives outside so anything that helps with this kind of thing has got to be good. That said, it's been absolutley fine so far, she's had her winter treatments and touch wood, has been fine so far...

I use something similar (it's precursor?) for 'oiling' guns when storing them. It is apparently from the aero-industry also and has similar properties in that it actively fights corrosion.
Never tried it on a car though; so are you proposing to get under the car and spray all the chassis etc? Interested as I'll be using mine over winter too (what's the point in NOT using it?!).

Hi Ricardo
We used to apply ACF 50 to the interior of panels of a stripped out light aircraft when they were in for a major check at Bournemouth Airport about 12 years ago. It was an American product and it claimed that a helicopter, that had crashed and sunk in the sea for several weeks, was stripped out ,after recovery, and the radio was dipped in ACF 50 for a short time and still worked!Which ment that the accident inspectors could gain more info about the crash.

Hi I like to use my Griffith throughout the year. At present every month I spray the chassis with Gunk and then power wash under the arches and chassis, then give everything metal that's exposed a spray with WD40. I'm thinking that this ACF - 50 could replace the WD40, particularly round the suspension, ball joints, etc.

ACF-50 is the same product that you can buy from Carcoon
Is this the stuff you spray over your bike during winter - it looks a dirty black (rather like it hasn't been washed for a week), then wash off when the weather is nice again. I saw this being used on someone elses bike and considered it, but after 5 winters my bikes just a little too tatty to bother now.
