I’m trying to install a Netgear ADSL router on my Dad’s pc, to replace the existing ADSL USB modem. The router works, all the lights are lit and the pc can see it, saying it is connected but I can’t access the router’s settings via a browser. I think the problem is that the pc has an IP address that starts with 86… rather than 255 which the router expects.

Further investigation shows that the 86 IP address seems to have been set on a VPN connection which my Dad claims to have no knowledge of. The VPN connection has got a slightly different BT internet user name to the normal one he logs in with using the ADSL modem.

What the best way to fix this so I can access the router and replace the USB modem?

in the network adapter properties just change it to "auto assigned" or DHCP etc - it will then get an IP address from the router...like it should be anyway - if your dad dosent use the other connection then delete any reference to it....also uninstall USB modem/drivers etc
