My dad's LS400 (P reg) is in for an "A" service at the moment - this is the lesser of their two regular types of service.

However, there are a number of things that had cropped up and that's made us baulk at the cost given its mileage (304,000) and age. They are :

Front main oil seal leaking
EGR pipe split (no idea what this is?)
Power steering pump leaking
Rear pads worn out.

They've quoted £2115 all in, which seems just a touch excessive to me, even considering it's a main dealer.

Ideally he'd like to keep it as it still runs fantastically, is in nop notch nick inside and, barring a couple of minor scrapes on one corner, outside. Mainly because its prime function has been motorway cruising really. Plus the cost of replacing it with something equivalent is, I imagine, going to be prohibitive.

So I guess I'm after two things

1) Can anyone recommend a decent indy in the Reading area who have experience of Lexii (I've been watching too much Alan Partridge)

2) Confirmation (or lack of) that all these things do indeed generally cost that much.

Ta.

call a few other garages and let them know what you've been quoted.

They will laugh then tell you a real quote.

Reading are notorious.

have you given Dave a call at ProLex UK?

I'm pretty sure they do services - dont think they are that far from Reading tbh...

Yell has no entry for them and their website's just a shopping site with no direct contact details. Got a number?

Ta Fidgits - he's in Southeast London unfortunately. Does have a contact in Silverstone but that'd also be too far.

Thats a ridiculous quote.

BTW, EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation (well at least on mine anyway)

Everything else is likely just seals and gaskets. DIY stuff IMO, especially the rear pads.

They all leak from the power steering pump at that age, mine does. Should be a couple hundred in labour to change the seals, but i'm guessing that the main dealer wants to replace the whole pump assembly.

I just fill up the reservoir every thousand miles or so

Ta folks. Unfortunately my pa's in Oz at the mo and when I tried explaining to him he just went "nah, pay it, we'll look for an independent when I get back in time for the next service" rolleyes

DIY's not an option, unfortunately.
