On the way back from work the heaterguage flew up to the max so i put the heaters on to hot only to find the air was absolutely freezing.

Ive checked the coolant and its not boiled any coolant so i think i can rule out the HG giving up.

Oh its a 2001 Ford fiesta zetec-s. 1.6 phase one . sigma engine i think

Thanks!

I'm sure water flows through the heater matrix all the time, if your temp gauge has gone up get it tested, if the thermostat sticks it will over heat but the heaters should still be hot.
