This morning I noticed a car suspiciously driving about the close at oh-dark-hundred so I maintained a watch then a hooded scumbag jumped out of the passenger seat and started shining a torch into a jeep parked there, trying the handles of that and a people carrier. So I 'phoned up the fuzz on 999 (while I was on the phone the perps drove off) and gave them as much info as I could (most of the numberplate, car description, etc)

I felt a bit useless actually because it was amazing just how much I was missing -- after all I was still half asleep.

Within a few minutes a patrol car cruised around and headed off.

Question is, what happens next? Nobody has called me to go in for an interview or anything. If they find the car is locally registered what can they do about it?

If they get a result from your piece of excellent public spiritness you may well be visited and witness statement taken.

If nothing resolved I would at least expect some contact to thank you for your actions, but don't hold you breath.

Well I can hardly moan about BIBs having to waste their time on speeders while criminals (seemingly) operate freely, and then fail to hand them potential scum.

My only problem is that human rights legislation or some other do-gooding piece of PC cancer would swing into action making sure nothing happened to them even if they were caught red handed.

Unlike speeders.

However, I still had to do everything within my own power to get the right result*.
