server co location help!

Hi
We currently host our own server hardware covering 4 full height racks half full of kit.
We are in the process of sliming this down and moving it offsite to a hosting provider and we will probably end up with about 2/3rds or a rack.
However the servers will draw about 15amps which means we cannot shove them in a rack, as the racks can only cope with 8amp power draw.
So we need 2 racks, both of which will not even be half full, then we get more hassle as when the servers are power cycled the power draw will spike this going over 8amps and tripping the power to the whole rack.
This is somewhat annoying.
So can anyone give me details of a data centre which will allow us to shove it all in one rack and take 16amps with the odd spike, I don't mind paying for the power, I just think it is pointless paying for space we will never use. Or what about 1/2 racks?
Or something...?
We have intelligent power strips so we can probably prevent huge spikes..

Hi,
I've used Poundhost (www.poundhost.com) for many years. They accept all sorts of kit including the type which doesn't need a rack and just sits on the floor
Not sure they can help you but it's definetly worth looking at. Reliability is high (> 99%) but not 99.999% but then again - the price reflects that. Good luck

No idea about what power each rack can take, but have used Shared Knowledge for years and have always been very good and knowledgable - Worth speaking to them.

I have 32amps in some of my Racks, and 16a minimum in the rest, but alas I've no interest in rack shifting for a few quid.
I'll happily rent you some new servers though, that way it's my headache for the power
and all you need to do is be in awe at the performance of your new Twin Quad Core Servers

What's limiting you to 8A per rack? If it's the service provider, get another one...

Most DC's now will only provision 8a per rack, if you want 16a you have to take 2 racks, 24a and 3 racks etc..
This is partially for cooling, partially due to the lack of overall available power, and partially to justify huge price hikes that have been imposed over the last year.

Are you serious? Every colo suite I've worked in recently has had it's racks stuffed full of servers, just this week I worked in a room with multiple racks full of blade enclosures with no racks or bays free... I don't know what sort of current they draw under load but 8A sounds feeble, my cooker/hifi/etc. can probably do better than that!
I'm not implying you're wrong, I just find it very surprising!

8a will power 5-6 Dell servers and a switch these days.
some DC's only offer 5a standard, as I say, I've got 32/24 in most, with 16a as a minimum in mine.
I'm not saying extra power isn't available, you just have to take x more racks to get x more power.
The theory is that each additional 8a you take is one less cabinet they can sell, and a potential heat hotspot as the power and thus heat are not as evenly distributed which puts extra strain on the cooling systems in some areas.
Gone are the days of £50 for 8a, iirc TeleCity Redbus list price is not just under £2k a month for a cabinet and 16amps..
This is why so many of the smaller / small margin providers have / are / will go(ne) bust, the market just cant sustain the ridiculously low prices we've enjoyed historically.
I actually think it will have a good effect on the market, all the kiddie and cr@p hosts will be forced out, leaving only those who actually do it well / make sustainable money from it will be left.

Jamie's answer is spot on. With kit getting denser and with the potential for hot spots we seperate all servers by 1U. This can mean a half full cabinet if you filled it with 1U servers.
Normally the racks are supplied with 12 - 16 amp supplies. You can have multiple supplies and they breakers are normally surge protected.
Some service providers are really suffering and are forcing customers to take additional cabinets.
With sensible cabinet layout planning you shouldn't have problem. We have a couple of empty racks if your interested and I'd happily do the maths with you.
