Bit of a strange one this, but does anyone know if an odometer is legaly required on a car (a kit car in this case)? It is not tested at MOT, and there is no mention of it's requirement in the SVA manual, but I am unsure if the C&U regs require it.

No I am sure it is not....

My Chimaera certainly doesn't have one.

I think a good link is www.motuk.com or dot co.uk - it has the full testing procedure.

As the speedo is not checked, an odometer is almost 100% not.

There is a Catch 22, though. I once called to ask if my bike needed indicators. I was told no, but if they were fitted, they must work!

So to avoid any worries, make sure the odometer is NOT on 0 when you turn up.

My Caterham was SVA'd in June and does not have an odometer and passed the SVA.

Forget it.

No legal requirement for an odometer in a motor car under Con and Use.

Not testable under MOT.

As far as I'm aware the only offence around odometers is selling a vehicle with a knowingly false odometer reading without declaring it.

Good point there, but we have to input the mileage on the computer, I'll have to see what happens if we can't

No idea about the odometer but an iPhone isn't a calibrated approved device so it won't be legal.

What part of the road traffic act says that it has to be a calibrated, approved device?

Motorcycles don't need a speedo for the MOT, but I believe they come under the construction use regs.

I have two bikes without speedos, one passed an MOT last year, here's the bike test manual:

https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/documents/m...

Car test speedometer is covered under section 7.8

The car IVA test says it can't be GPS, for a start. So does the Motorcycle SVA.

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/governmen...
p35 - "Note. A global positioning system (GPS) such as a Sat Nav device is not an acceptable alternative to a speedometer. "

Still no requirement for an odometer...

wonder where you would stand on limited mileage policies and not have an odometer

Exactly the same place as with an odometer that doesn't work...

If I took my first TVR on a long run the odometer would freeze after 80 miles or so. I thought it was broken but it came back to life after a few days and several hundred miles. This happened several times. smile

I never did get round to getting it fixed.

C&U replaced years ago by Type Approval. Speedo required to be accurate within 10% at 30mph: distance measurement not specified.
