what would be the offence/punishment if a doctors receptionist went delving into someones medical history for the purpose of gaining 'skeleton in the cupboard/ammunition' on someone that he/she had a personal vendetta against?
The sack at the very least, I would imagine.

Agreed. I am sure there are sections in the Data Protection Act about this which would give her employer the ammunition.
What you would need is documentary evidence that she has done this which you can present to the employer.
I would then be demanding that she was sacked to avoid me going to the police and local press...
A "friend" of mine used to work at a bank and I believe it operates in a simlar way in doctor's receptions. If there is a genuine need for him (banker) and her (receptionist) to look in files, then it is completely ok. What is not ok is if they go delving around for no reason.
I know this, because my "friend" got sacked for looking up lots of footballer's accounts, the tw4t.

To be fair, you want to go to the press etc.. as well as a warning to the other receptionists etc. not to do that.
I agree. If it were me I would probably just 'hint' to the press anyway after she got the sack.
If she is the type of person to go looking through peoples records for dirt, she cant complain when the dirt sticks to her.

Are you a doctors receptionist by any chance?, are you offering this as a service, I might be interested, If I send you my bosses name, how long will it take you to get back to me?.

now there's an interesting sideline!!.
fortunately not. Just sometimes you get people that work in a position that because of what they are entrusted with, can think they are little 'gods'/'adolphs', if you see what I mean. The banker example was a good one I'd forgotten about, but there are of course many.

From what I remember if a doctor's receptionist breaks confidence by leaking a patient's details, the doctor him/herself can be legally struck off even if they have no involvement. Assuming the BMC dont want to make an example of the doctor it is a fairly safe bet that the receptionist would be sacked before they get the doctor into any more trouble
