Hi all,
First time on here (so be kind!).
The time has come to sell my old 406 coupe 3.0 V6 and move up to something better and the Monaro has attracted my attention.
Don't think there is anything else out there with the power I am after for the same price (and there is no way I will consider becoming one of the millions of silver BMW M3 drivers ! ! ). I quite like driving something that you don't see on the road every day.
I would just like some pointers and general comments from some of you who have lived with the Monaro for a while... are Vauhxhall dealers any good with dealing with anything other than Vectras or Corsas? From experience, even Peugeot dealers don't seem to cope with my V6 coupe so how do Vauxhall cope with something 5 / 6 times bigger than a Corsa ? !
Any points to look at before buying? I've read here about leaking sunroofs but is there anything else that can be a problem?
Does insurance become a problem if there have been any mods? My current insurers won't even cover a standard Monaro, let alone a modded one!
I think I'll be looking at the 5.7 litre early models with a budget up to £20k.
Thanks for any comments,
Chris

Welcome to the fold!!!
If you go to the FAQ sticky it will answer some of your questions, and the gang will be along to fill you in on everything esle shortly I am sure.
PS
Monaro's dont have a sunroof, so it shouldnt leak !! just the door seals
PPs
With 20k, you should be able to get a decent 05 model CV8 or even an ealy slightly higher mileage 6.0 car now with Pre reg VXR's at £26995

Hi Chris,
(Ahem!) £15K for cash will buy you this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2004-Vauxhall-M
I'll even guarantee that from next week onwards it won't leak water!! (see other thread for explanation...!)
Add AP Racing brakes and a ripshifter and you'd have a true megacar and still a grand left over to spend on fuel.
A Plan Insurance are happy to insure modded Monaros at pretty decent rates, see that pinned thread.

Thanks guys,
So nothing major that can go wrong with them then?
What about servicing? Is there a 'big' service due at any point - like cam-belt changes or do they only come at around 80k miles / 8 years?
Thanks for the links for current 'for sale' cars, but I am not going to be in the market until spring...just wanting to do some research so I know what to look for.
Thanks again,
Chris

No real big charges. Cam uses a steel chain, which does wear, but slightly slack cam timing rather than catestrophic failure is probably more likely. The engine is a picture of simplicity. Really just brake disk wear and clutches are probably your big buck items. Except for your mods

I know what you mean - made the 'mistake' of browsing the Wortec website already
Think that the step up from a 210bhp front wheel drive Peugeot to a lots bhp rwd Monaro will keep me happy for a year before I start thinking about mods

Everyone says that!!

Don't know what you mean Greens - had mine a year and it remains unmodified

I went from a 280(ish)bhp Astra to the Monaro and said that I would not modify this at all.
Headers, Cat-Back, Rip-shifter, AP Brakes and Supercharger have followed and I still haven't had it a year

Do not whatever you do go for a drive anyones modified car or listen to any free flow exahausts or you will almost certainly catch a disease with no known cure.
In fact delete all bookmarks to this site and never again search for "holden" "monaro", "gto" or anything similar on the web at all. Forget you ever heard of modifications at all
