HELP..!!

Does anyone have a neat trick to seperate a top steering UJ that has rusted to the spline on an S3?? I have undone all the bolts but can't get the UJ off. I tried heating it up and prising it apart with a screwdriver but all I have managed to do is break the screwdriver.

Very frustrated now..!!

Hit the fker with a hammer for about half an hour - it did the trick for me.

Seriously, the only way I could find was progressive 'tapping' around the UJ with a hammer until it finally came loose (it did take about half an hour). I was worried about the effect this might be having on the bottom UJ, but I couldn't see another way to do it!

You can make sure the replacement UJ lasts longer (the top UJ seems to have a hard life) by greasing it (I used copper grease) and then covering it (bike inner tube or whatever held on with cable ties).

Soak joint in pentrating oil. Clamp on mole grip very tight on shaft. Hit more grip with big hammer. Repeat until joint frees.

Make sure that the clamping bolts are undone.

Lots of penetrating oil and leave to soak.

Make sure the pinch bolt is completely removed, drive a big flat-blade screwdriver into the split in the collar to open it up, use a drift so you can get good clean impact on the bottom edge of the UJ, keep turning the steering so you work your way round the collar, it WILL come loose eventually. I couldn't find any way to protect the lower UJ and rack from the impact of the hammer so I just kept working at it with a small lump hammer (rather than taking a sledge to it and beating the cr*p out of it - which I wanted to after wrestling with it for half an hour). Don't give up!
