Internet Providers.....again

I know that this has been done to death but i am in a quandrant. I have just moved house and had the BT line fitted. I was with Freeserve that then went to Wanadoo and is now Orange, dont get me wrong the service has been OK but i do not think tha package is very good, Speed 2mbit, download limit 2gig £17:99 per month.
I have issues with Orange because they would not upgrade my phone so i am not very willing to give them my hard earned cash for the Broadband. I need to tell them that i have moved and get the line set up but not willing to do this if i am tied in for another 12 months.
Basically i want something fast, more download limit that is reliable and cheap!
any ideas

Been with Virgin for years, never had a single problem.
Just had a free upgrade from them too.
For £14.99 a month I now get 8meg speed and a 6gb download limit AND free evening and weekday phone calls to land lines.
I thought it was good deal. Was previously paying the same for 1 meg and no free phone calls.
Happy to recommend them.

Demon - now upto 8MB* MaxDSL line - £20 a month - no download limit, they just have a fair usage policy - that is, if you leave fileshareing on between 9am and 9pm..
Customers that use their connection for email and web browsing for 8 hours every day would not be affected.
Gamers would not be affected - even if they played for several hours every day.
Customers that download reasonably large amounts of music and video would not be affected. For example, a thousand music tracks and five films every month would not be considered unfair usage.

An 8MB package doesn't mean that you will get 8MB to your desktop, the rates given are the MAXIMUM possible. All kind of factors are fooling around and nobody can give you a guarantee about the speed you will get.
Most important ones I know of:
- your distance to the central.
- quality of the copperlines both inside your building and outside to that central.

But is there any way to measure the speed though?
If I'm only getting 1Mb speed, I might as well pay for a 1Mb package?

It also has a useful comparison of all the ADSL providers.http://speedtester.bt.com/ will give you you current speed profile

Does anyone know how you can test how fast your internet connection is?
I am on Virgin paying $24.99 a month for 8Mb unlimited (bit gutted about the $14.99 Virgin deal now!!), but the connection seems slower than my previous 2Mb connection.
How do i prove this?

Have a look at the adslguide forums - Virgin are over capacity at the moment. Like, 50% over I am on Virgin paying $24.99 a month for 8Mb unlimited (bit gutted about the $14.99 Virgin deal now!!), but the connection seems slower than my previous 2Mb connection.
How do i prove this?

I've noticed exactly the same as you. I'm giving them until February then if its still the same, I'm off.

Anybody on SKY broadband, just found out that i can get all packages

Yes, I am on ther max package 16mb (allegedly).
I've never seen more than 5mb and it is often down well below 1mb,yet I'm only about 1km from the exchange. It is anything but predictable. Upload speeds are much better typically around 600kb.
Internet email just doesn't work at all for me, but POP does although I now use gmail instead as I'm not sure I'll stay with sky for longer than the first year unless things improve.
Leo,
Max is "upto" 16Mb. There are a lot of things that can affect speed, distance being just one. The modems are configured on Max to run at the maximum possible speed your copper can physically run at, and they constantly check the line to see if it could run quicker, so the fact your's runs around 5Mbps means that's probably the best you'll get from anyone.
I trust you've followed the install guide (that bit of paper you probably thrown away :-) and plugged your router into the main BT master socket? (It's the white main socket with the BT logo on it where the wires from outside terminate). Are you also sure you have a micro filter on every single extension socket?
Internal wiring is one of the largest reasons for poor performance, although if you are about 1km as the crow flies, you could easily have 2 to 4km or copper wire between you and the kit in the exchange. In that case 5Mbps is pretty good, and with 1km radial I wouldn't expect more than about 8-9Mbps even if you had "perfect" copper between you and the exchange.
If you have any further queries then just give technical support a call. They can automatically test you line, and if you really believe you should get more than they can have a look at it for you.
Also, check out skyuser.co.uk and Digital Spy for many helpful tips from other satisfied users on how to improve things.
Have fun with it!
