Chim 450 '97 - When I press the clutch pedal I often get an odd creaking/clicking sound. I thought it might be a spring in the pedal (it does sound like the kind of noise a spring might make) but it seems to come from underneath the car somewhere ? It doesnt always do it, usually only when cold or when its been sat still (say in traffic) . When shes warm and in normal driving it doesnt happen.

Does this sound serious or something I dont need to worry about ?

It's likely to be coming from [one or other of] slave cylinder, release arm, release bearing or diaphragm (clutch cover). I have a similar problem, except mine's fine when cold and gets worse when warm! It shouldn't be anything to worry about if the clutch is still working properly, but it is annoying.

I copied this from a previous message. My local garage found this no problem, charged me a fiver to do it.

"In fact the noise comes from inside the bell housing from the clutch release mechanism. Depending on the model year the bell housing may have a inspection hatch at the bottom of it (mine did 99, T Reg) They pulled this off (so no gearbox drop needed, but access is very tight) and basically lubricated everything involved. Not only has the squeak gone but the whole release seems a lot smoother

That was most informative as my '99 Chimp does exactly the same before the engines started then it disapears. Thanks guys.

What a great well written explaination hehe - I swore the noise from mine was coming from the pedal but its actually the sound travelling through the pedal linkage that leads you to believe this

It can definitely be the clutch release bearing too - had to have one replaced on mine, and needs some regular lube
