I have just bought an HP laptop running Win2000. I want to put XP pro on it so it runs the same as my Mums PC ( This is for my Dad to use, so I want to keep it the same and simple )
My question is, do I just install XP as I would a home pc and away I go? Or do I need to find drivers for the mouse thing and other laptop programs?
Thank you

Should all work, if you do an upgrade you'll probably have no trouble at all.

In all but the most extreme situations, Win2k drivers and WinXP drivers are the same thing, so what worked before should work now Win2k's version number is NT5, XP's is NT5.1

Well, just did the upgrade.
I now get a pop up saying HP CONFIG Service error, do you want to tell microsoft?
What is this and how do I get round it?
Cheers

I'm not really up to speed with the HP software on laptops.

Does this only happen once the PC is booted?

Can you find anything more detailed in the event logs?

I would use msconfig (start -> run -> msconfig) and see if I could find the HP service that is causing the problem and remove it from the start up. Be warned it may affect some functionality with the laptop so disable it, see if you can do all of the normal things use the laptops function keys to switch things off and on and change the volume etc. If you have no problems I would then leave it is.

Good luck and post again if you are still having problems,
Lee.

Google is providing too many results to be usable. But I'd suggest it's either something to do with an old printer (do you have a HP printer as well as the laptop?) or some sort of funky ass utility HP install that makes media keys work... or some such. Which probably isn't too happy with all the security stuff in WinXP-SP2...

If you can't get in to Windows normally, drop in to Safe Mode and run msconfig, find any and all HP services and commit acts of genocide.
Alternatively, see if the little swine appears on the start menu and un-install it.
Again another alternative is to wander through the Services part of Administrative tools, find the HP Service one and set it to Manual.

Reboot.
Swear.
Go to HP website, enter model of laptop, download driver packages for xp.
Swear again at the idiotic website.
Swear as the download box appears and you save it.
Swear some more as it installs.
Go get a beer.
Reboot.
Job should be a good un.

ETA: Yes, working with Windows does give you a more creative use of obscenities.
