I have the chance to buy a new Carrera 4 in July. It's obviously very expensive for an everyday car as I do around 20,000 miles per year.

Can anybody give me an idea of likely running costs - servicing etc.

first out the post I would say spend the extra & get the C4S, it is better value when you look at the extra's included & will do better come re-sale.
20k mileage pa is high for a porker, I think you will loose about £20-25k after 2 year's & 40k miles, which is still good for a new buy.Ask one of the Porsche buyers for a valuation on a 2yr old 40k car to be sure. Servicing is cheap for the first one (£300 ish) but higher for the second year (£700 ish), tyres the backs will go at circa 10/12k & cost around £500 the pair.Hope this helps & all the best with the car.

Thanks for that.

The depreciation is about what I had expected. My current M5 has lost around £20K in 2 years and 40,000 miles. From what you say the porker is a little more expensive on servicing and about the same on tyres. Only getting 21 mpg from the M5 though.

An M5 eh, a very nice car & with four seats & a boot (C4s have glove boxes for a boot!!).
I hope you have decided to go for the C4S it's that bit more special to drive (although the M5 is great)
& own. Just make sure you add the sports exhaust,Bose sound & the alloy hand brake & gear lever to your extra's list. If you are still going the standard C4
route I'd say buy second hand (s/h C4S are still fetching near list!) there is a lot of private sale choice at the moment.Go on do it, you are only here once!!

I really don't want the C4S. I prefer the understated looks of the Carrera 4. Would look at used but as I use the car as a 'mobile office' I really need things like a phone, sat-nav etc. etc. Not many used ones up with the stuff I need.

Has anybody heard a rumour about a general facelift for these cars this summer?

The new shape (like 993) look is coming here next year I've heard.

Just a thought, why the C4

It is slower than the C2, and a little more costly to run, and has no luggage space (2nd Diff takes up boot space)

OK 4WD is a factor in wet, but the C2 is still very good and IMHO more of a drivers car

I agree with Gax if you don't want the C4S then the C2
makes the most sense.I have the Turbo now which does need 4wd, but previously owned two different C2's & traction just isn't an issue with rear engined cars. As Gax said you get more boot space,a little more grunt
& you save money. The press are definitely talking about another "facelift" model for the end of next year (MY05)

The C4 / S is a lard ass too, at around 100kg porkier than a basic C2. Unless you have turbo size grunt to lay down then 4x4 is a waste of time imo.

yes .....boo hisss at the c4s

The boot on the c4 is small, at least on the c2 you can get a fair bit in it, no traction problems, not as 'flash' as c4s nor as heavy as the c4.

I went for the Targa just to be different. ! Rear tyres lasted 8300 miles + 1 Track day. perfect reliablility, compared to my M5 which was Sh't.

Depends if you live at the top of a hill or not. Last winter I couldn't get the Tiv up the hill - and didn't bother getting my Boxster S out after that. Waited for the thaw.

A C4/S would have climbed it no problem.

Four wheel drive has its uses - even in a sports car.
