Have just found out that if your car is on a Q plate it will not need to be emissions tested when going for an MOT........its a visual inspection only.........read page 8 of the attached PDF document.........if you have Q plates, I would advise you print it off and take it with you when going for the MOT........mine has failed on this previously, so its gotta be a bonus!

Error 404 - Page Not Found
The page you are looking for is no longer at this address
As part of a government initiative, all agencies with the Department for Transport have relaunched their website. These sites will now only promote corporate content. All information on schemes or activites can be found on DirectGov (for the private motorist) or Transport Office (for the commercial industry). The VOSA website provides links to this content, within VOSA operational activities, should you need any assistance.

I will look for the page on that site though, it could be in my interest to have it with me for my next MOT

This has always been the case AFAIK.

Have a look at the MOT manual at www.motuk.co.uk/manual/how_to_use_page_one.htm and you will notice that section 3 states:

MOT Manual said:

"A vehicle's 'first used' date is;
a. Its date of manufacture, if the vehicle was originally used . without being registered in GB [e.g., an imported vehicle or ex-HM Forces vehicle), or
b. Vehicles having a Q plate registration when presented for MOT are to be treated as follows: For emission purposes only, all these types are to be considered as vehicles first used before 1st August 1975. For all other testing purposes they are to be considered as being first used on 1 st January 1971,or
c. In any other case, the earlier of either
. Its date of first registration, or
.The date six months after it was manufactured."

Yep, tis true. Had mine done a couple of weeks ago. Very handy loophole - who says having a Q plate is a stigma? Do you see me wiring my car up with a cat and fishtank hose to lean out the mixture every year? :P

This not only applies to 'Q' plates.
If your car has gone through SVA with an engine older than 1975 then the same applies even if it then gets registered as a new vehicle with current plates or age related plates.

If it has gone through SVA it should have a note in V5C box 3 saying "1. SVA cert issued 10 04 2004 Emissions - Visual smoke only. ( Words from my 04 Ultima (6.7 litre V8) V5C).

Extra bonus...as the vehicle has no stated CO2 figure the tax cannot be rated on that so my tax is £175 compared to the £210 it would surely have been with the CO2 figure that engine size would produce.

Steve

Edit ... because it is stated on the V5C there can be no dispute at MOT.

so can you drop any old pre 75 motor in, get the SVA, then take the motor straight back out and drop a new one in for the registration etc? or does the engine it does the SVA with have to be the same one as it then goes through the registration with?

I SVA'ed my car with a 3.5% CO 1200ppm HC motor from a 1983 donor then put in a later motor the following year that came out of a CAT equipped car. V5 states the CO & HC as tested @ SVA, so that's what it gets MOT'ed at. I DID update the V5 to reflect the new motor capacity & engine number so they can't say they didn't know!

YMMV

It might be prudent to wait till after registration Then do a change after you have a V5 as there is no provision/need to notify engine age

ahhh - good point oh well it's all a bit academic at the moment as I've still not built the workshop, let alone the car! Something to remember for the future though...
