SOTW:Triumph TR7

1980 V Reg TRIUMPH TR7

When it comes to cars, everyone wants a bargain. And with cars getting more reliable, more durable and more rot-free than ever they have been, paying pocket money for an older machine need not be a total restoration job.

In other words, old cars have never been such a good buy -- you get a lot of car for your money, and £1,000 is still throwaway money when it comes to cars.

So in the spirit of aiming for fun, low-cost motoring, here's our regular weekly slot following a trawl of Auto Trader's depths to find a drive-away bargain.

1980 V Reg TRIUMPH TR7 2 Doors, Manual, Convertible, Petrol, 56,127 miles, Metallic Green, MOT May 07, Tax end Dec. £700.

From what you can see it looks okay, very low miles, stick a V8 in it, get a copy of the Rimmer Brothers catalogue and have some cheap fun.

TR7s were a disaster when they first came out and while any car still surviving is likely to be one of the better ones it doesn't make it reliable, durable or rot-free!

£700 is a lot of money to pay for a TR7 even if it isn't a restoration job - although one might argue that all TR7s are restoration jobs waiting to happen.

It was after reading the Sheds of teh week that I bought a 97 Saab turbo for £700 on ebay, serviced it for £200 and gave it a good clean and its one of the nicest drives for pocket money that I have ever driven. Useful when your other car is 2 seats max.

I think my £700 saab is better value than the TR7 for the same money, now, if it was the TR6.............

Is your Saab one of those with the copy of the Dolomite Triumph engine? Or is it a Vauxhall Chavalier? Worse still and OpAl Vectra?

Hear about the guy who went into Halfords and asked at the counter.....
Have you got a wiper blade for a TR7?
The assistant replied...
Hmmmmmmm.... sounds like a good exchange

I read somewhere that by lugging in the 3.5l rover V8 and re-wiring the electrics its a decent car to actually live with. Looks divide some, but I saw a black one the other day (hardtop) and its certainly unique, nice wedgy profile. But not in that green, I got a headache just looking at the pic.

What for all the bits that fall off (including rust) and the numerous spares it would need??

When I was 17, part of my job was to drive my boss around after he got a ban for D+D. Had to move a TR7 from his garage. When we got there he told me what it was.. Car and Car Conversions (right magazine name?) had made a replica V8 rally car as one of their projects ,which he had aquired. Dry sumped, tuned V8, sat about 4 inches higher than standard and sounded LOUD. Bearing in mind I had a 1977 1.3 marina as my car, I was rather scared to say the least. Could hardly see over the wheel let alone the end of the bonnet, but it was my first proper powerful car to drive. BL stopped making them when they were getting them right, the V8 made it a real sportscar even if the styling was a little adventureous.

these guys: www.ss-preparations.co.uk/ make a very good living out of restoring TR7s & 8s...

they do a conversion of the 2litre 7 to a 3.5l rV8 - but make it handle better than the TR8

Just down the road from me
