I've just bought a 996 year 2003 cabrio which is light on extras. I would like to add the following which seams to be available through the Tequipment 911 displayed on the Porsche web site.

Satellite Navigation
6 CD Multi Changer
Self Dimming Mirrors
Roof Transport System

Currently just have the single CDR 23 player and Porsche sound system.

I would be interested in knowing if anybody has any idea whether a dealer will be able to fit these and how much it is likely to cost.

Thanks in advance

Alistair

P.S. Previous car was DB7 Vantage and before the a E46 M3 Coupe.

I don't think you can retrofit the full Porsche Sat. Nav.system, only upgrade your stereo to include some nav type functions(!!) but I may be wrong, you can certainly add an aftermarket system but be careful as people are funny about buying secondhand cars with non-porsche mods !! As to the rest I think your dealer can do these.......but I hope you have deep pockets.
I also hope you have the Porsche sound pack/DSp/Bose sound system as one of my previous Porkers had a standard system & it was, shall we be polite & say "musically challenged" (e.g. CRAP)now that IS worth spending extra on (just adding a multi-play wont help the cause)my local Porsche garage recommended a good local car Hi-Fi place. All the best with your quest

Porsche use Becker stereos as Original Equipment. A Becker Head unit sat nav system should just slot in www.becker.de

(IMPORTANT: Check your stereo to see if it uses fibre optics - think it does in your m/y - this effects £ ).

Porsche Club Great Britain's mag - Porsche Post - has a guy who advertises in there selling porsche Branded gear but cheaper than OPC prices.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't retro fit Porsche Sat Nav - please enlighten us if you know !!! ;-) - but I DEFINATELY wouldn't go through the OPC channel... they quoted be £550 to fit a 6xCD Changer (FIT ONLY - I was supplying!). I got it done for £25 elsewhere.

Try Douglas Valley breakers or similar to get all the bits from a salvaged car.

We've talked about this before.

You cannot retro fit PCM (Porsche Communication Management), which includes a Sat Nav function bundled with Audio/Telephone/On Board Computer. However, Porsche do sell standalone Becker Sat Nav head units.

Agree, do not buy from Porsche, get it from the guy in PP or somewhere else on the Net.

OK guys - you are wrong. But only because this has recently changed.

If your car is a MY03 vehicle it will be using Porsche's new MOST system. Becker units WILL NOT WORK. I got this from the chap who runs Becker in the UK.

Becker will most certainly be developing units that can replace the stereo head in these 03 cars - but have not yet to the best of my knowledge.

Now - with regard to PCM. Once again it cannot be retrofitted in pre 03 cars (IIRC) BUT it most certainly CAN be installed in 03 cars. I know because I called up Porsche and asked them.

The answer I got wasn't 100% to my liking though...

"Well yes, sir, PCM can be fitted to your Porche but we don't have any units and don't know when we will get any units" - unfortunately they called while I was away from my desk otherwise I would have just ordered one and told 'em I could wait!

I'm going to call them again today and see what they say - didn't get the price last time either...

Just called Porsche.

Yes they can fit PCM.

4.5K!

For the PARTS ONLY! Then there's £100 per hour. Cheaper to trade the car in!

The sat nav in the old one wasn't even that good. Suppose they've improved a bit but I bet there's much better systems around for a LOT less.

My 996 had PCM. The sat nav went wrong 2 days before I sold it so I knocked £500 off the price of the car. The problem was with the navigation CD ROM drive that sits under the screen. Porsche wanted £1200 exchange, for a replacement. It's a f***ing CD ROM drive. It costs about £25 to make at most.

Don't bother with PCM, get a decent after market sat nav unit.

IMHO.

Moral of the story is to try & buy with the goodies on board.I said he would need deep pockets !!!!!!
Got my latest porker & was told by ALL the Porsche BUYERS that Sat Nav is now important for re-sale price. Mainly because everything including a Smart will have one on board soon & if you are spending 50-100k people expect a few toy's.I know Porkers are about
the driving, but toy's are still nice to have.

I didn't get PCM on my car as I regarded it far more important to have space in the the centre console for the tidy installation of my licence protection systems.

There are like minded people out there who would specifically NOT buy used Porsches with PCM.

DAZ

(The equivalent system in an S-class or 7 series is an absolute necessity at retail time)

Come on you'd miss the sexy voice telling you to go the wrong way if you didn't have PCM !!!! Having said that 170 MPH needs some license protection kit !!!
Only joking !

Well at those prices I fully agree with you. I have finally decided that I will invest in a transferrable unit that I can use in the TVR and in the Porsche. NAVMAN have a new dedicated unit out - I'm going to order one of those tomorrow.

Well, we were told that we could not change a fully loaded LHD 996 to RHD and keep all the functions, but we did it. The car in question had sat nav, memory seats et al and we converted it to RHD with a used front loom from a donor 996, plugged everything in and then had to teach the local OPC how to use the PS2 tester to reprogramme the systems. Aside from a minor glitch in the mirror wiring affecting the memory seat functions everything worked perfectly first time.

So, if you can find all the parts at a breakers for an early car, YES you can retro fit most items but it is an involved job and probably not worth the effort unless you are very determined and not paying £100 per hour to do.

The self dimming mirror is dead easy - you just need to order the mirror and install it. There will be a cable from it to the pick up point in the front screen, hey presto - self dimming rear mirror. I think the door mirror is the same. I saw this mod on the 986board from the US.

I'm confused, looking for help! I have a 2001 996 cabriolet that came from the factory with standard becker radio (no nav. system) I'm trying to to add/install a PCM 1 or PCM 2 (for the gadgetry, porsche look, usefulness, resale, etc.) Our local dealer says "they don't recommend it" and won't do the install. I can't get them however to say it can't be done. I have collected numerous conflicting opinions. I can get the unit and parts via internet or salvage and don't mind snaking wire harnesses, etc. Does anyone have first hand experience or references regarding this modification?

Looking for additional input! wirehead
