My friend queued in London first at midnight, then at 8AM (for which he took the day off!) to get a Wii.

We spent a lot of the weekend playing on it and I thought I'd give opinions for anyone to read. Basically it's really very very fun.

The controllers work even better than you would imagine - it's amazing noone else came up with controllers like this until now. The baseball game is best for showing this off - you move the controller and the bat on screen moves to exactly the same position - front, back, up, down, it even knows if you are twisting the controller round. Proper 3D.

We had wii play and wii sports. They're both fairly fun especially for two players but ultimately a bit lacking in longevity. Will have to wait and see some other games to see what they come up with but these launch games show off some ingenuity and give you an idea of the huge amount of scope for completely revolutionary games the controllers give. I mean, there's a fishing game which is actually fun!

The boxing game is incredibly tiring as you have to stand up and block/punch with both hands. It feels as tiring as real boxing probably is, but without being punched in the face as well. In fact a lot of the games are more tiring than normal games because you move your hands or arms rather than just your fingers. I think the wii will be the best thing ever to cure obesity. In Boxing you hold the controllers over your face and it blocks your face, down over your chest and it blocks your chest. You can put one hand over your face and one over your chest and it does that - it's amazing. The hitting is poor though - for some reason the character doesn't always hit when you hit, and punches are quite slow.

We only had a composite cable so the picture quality was pretty poor. The graphics aren't bad but I can't imagine them stunning you like a PS3s or XBOX360s, but it doesn't matter because you don't notice and are too busy playing the games. Would look much better with the component video cable.

We downloaded bomberman 1993 for a few hundred 'wii points' and spent hours blowing each other up with 4 players (and making topical jokes about whether it was the inspiration for suicide bombers). The fact that we ended up having most fun playing a 1993 game shows how gameplay is important. If the Wii gets even half decent games developers behind it I think it has the potential for some amazing - but more importantly revolutionary - games.

The console is very small and almost silent which is a huge bonus. You can use gamecube wired controllers with it which is some nice backward compatability, and you can also download loads of retro games from the home screen via the internet with it.

I also believe that we have now come up with every joke to do with 'wee' that there is.

The low price is a bonus and it's really worth it.

Great honest assessment, thanks!

I'm going to get off the back on this, for the Bomberman alone. I remember, my friends and I had many a 4am finishes on that game!

I wonder how long it will be before similar motion sensitive controllers become available for the 360 or PS3?

Hmmmmm?

The PS3 controller is already motion sensitive... Microsoft have suggested about doing a similar thing, but I think it will just be seen as a 'jumping on the bandwagon' type movement rather than an essential piece of kit.

You need to see a bladder doctor (what're they called?). Could be serious.

PS3 motion sensor is hardly used with any game thats currently out and feels rather gimmicky itself. Nothing wrong with the 360 pad imo, it should be left as it is.

I'm still waiting for Comet to phone me and tell me mine has arrived. Tomorrow or Friday apparently. Grrr. And I am first on their waiting list too.

yes

It really is great.

What it needs now is more games in the virtual arcade and some online games. Mario Kart online for instance...

Zelda wont last me more than a few months and I've not really seen anything in the current line up that i want, possibly Red Steel though because the multiplayer looks good.

Get Zelda and Super Monkey Ball!

I just wish they would do a Wii version of the old Lylat Wars game on the N64. That would be top banana

Is SMB any good then? I've heard a lot of people saying its rubbish compared to the cube games, which were excellent. I have no idea why they dropped Monkey Fight
