Sometimes you can get in the car switch the aircon on clutch ingages and the compressor spins and every thing is ok.Other times you can press the button on the dash and nothing happens???If the gas was low wouldnt it get to a point where the fuse would blow and the aircon wouldnt come on at all??Not what ive got.The problems been like this since ive had the car?

My experience with a/c and low gas is just the lack of cooling, if nothing happens then usualy it is a bad connection to the compressor or other mechanicals, or for the bad news it is a siezed compressor. If it is the latter then it will never work untill replaced. If it is intermittent then i would favour an electrical fault. Does you fan work? because if it's this then maybe the a/c is working and you are just not getting the cold air pushed into the car. I had this problem on my Volvo T5 and it turned out to be the fan switching it's self on and off.

Fans are working. You can tell when the aircon is working because from inside the car when you press the button you can hear the clutch ingage.Other times nothing happens. That goes for looking at it visually as well.

If you can, check the switch, i know it is different but i have just had a problem with my wipers working when they felt like it and not when the weather needed them. It turned out to be a loose connection on the ribon connector that some times made and some times didn't. It just needed pushing back on. The same with the fuse, make sure it is in good order and fitted well.

I was told when the gas runs low the aircon clutch doesn't kick in - it's designed that way.

I had the same thing a while ago. For me it was a dodgy connector, the one that sits right by the compressor. Have a look the connector is fairly obvious, give it a wiggle and see if the clutch engages/disengages.

Thats exactly the case - also too much gas can stop the a/c working even though the clutch will cut in. I had 1kg put in mine and it didnt work, sold the car to someone else, he had it regassed at a different place and they put in .75kg (I think) and it worked fine.

There's a pressure switch located at the receiver-drier in behind the panel in front of the LHS front wheel.

It keeps the clutch disengaged if there is not enough gas.

It and the stat under the steering column are wired in series AFAIK.

Your problem sounds like gas or the car too cold to call for cooling.

Try shorting out the stat connections (temporarliy of course) to eliminate that.

This also happens when you have a hole in the interconnecting hose - which is what I have and why my clutch isn't engaging. The hose is on back order.

I can have it working fine for a week or so then it will go on the blink for a couple of weeks, then it will return to normal.

Go along to a hydraulic hose maker.

They should be able to make you one, and it will probobly cost a fraction of the main dealer price.

Didn't really cross my mind to try and source a replacement as you don't tend to use the aircon in Winter - although I once read that it helped in demisting - probably doesn't apply to the Cerb as the cold and hot air isn't mixed. I only noticed that is wasn't working because I like to fire it up every so often to ensure the seals etc stay lubricated. Worth looking into a replacement especially as there isn't any word on how long the hose is going take on back order.
Cheers.

It does, it dehumidifies the air inside the car.
