I had the bad taste to hire a Porsche from Avis, take it to the 'Ring and, er, put it in the barriers (the car broke, onist). Now Avis is telling me I owe them €25,500... And that's before the 'Ring puts in its claim for new barriers and the tow-away boys have their bit.

Has anyone any experience of challenging this? My current lines are:

a) it's a public toll road, so it should be covered. It is subject to normal German Highway rules, after all.

b) the clause saying "don't take the car on a track" was not on the piece of paper I signed; nor was it brought to my attention. After all, you don't hire a Porsche to pussyfoot around

All thoughts VERY gratefully received...

New one. They abandoned Smartgroups, then Yahoogroups and set up their own. It's a forum and email distribution.

what a knob. Surely he realised he was taking the proverbial and then when he stuffed it tries to worm out of liability.

I suggest he pays up and saves himself huge additional court costs.

What a really really stupid thing to do. Sounds like he's gonna get what's coming to him.

Sorry DG, I didn't mean to imply that this was kleonard's rental. I'm sure it has nothing to do with him. I mentioned him in the title as he got a 2,000 EUR bill for returning an undamaged car simply because it had been there.
