O.K. just bought my first TVR a 98 Chimaera, the look of terror and the clenched buttocks has now subsided to be replaced with an idiotic grin.
Except when I try and put it in reverse that is, if I forget to put it in first gear first it crunches really badly.
If I select first before hand though its fine.
I'm sure I will get used to this really quick but just need to know if its normal.
Thanks for any advice you may be able to offer.

Yep, they all do that. Keep slipping it through first before going into reverse to avoid embarrassing noises.

"They all do that sir"
Sound like you’re mastering the beast already!
Put it in a forward gear before you select reverse and your crunch will disappear.

Beat me to it Trefor!

It hasn't got to be 1st before reverse though, any forward gear will have the same effect.

Of the three pedals by your feet try depressing the left most just before you change.

Seriously, I used to nudge it into 5th before reverse - unless of course the car is moving You'll get used to it, perhaps get it smoooooth.

Untill that is, you pull up outside a posh bar with posh people sat outside with martini's, TVR's just know exactly when to play up

Phew! That's OK then, thanks for putting my mind at rest - I think I shall go for another blast to celebrate before it cools down. Thanks again.

i usually slip it into 5th before reverse. sometimes it still refuses to go into reverse so with the engine idle, i hold it against the reverse slot and slowly lift the clutch, which should ease it in.

First is preferable to fifth, lines the cogs up in the box properly or something technical like that.

I use 3rd...

It makes the noise because there is no syncro on reverse... (just in case you are wondering!)

I use 4th (just to be different). I think any gear will do - except a back to front baseball cap.

I use fifth, but sometimes even then it threatens to scrunch, and i've found (seriously!) that the words "can i have reverse please?" work wonders
