Decent PS2 shoot em ups??

Dug the PS2 out last night after several months gathering dust. Forgotten how much fun Need for Speed: Most Wanted is.

Anyway, i'm sorted for driving games but short on decent shoot em ups. Did the PS2 ever get any? I'm ideally talking the frantic blasting of r-type or gradius or 1943 or smash TV.

Playability, not graphics is what I am after.

One criteria though - it needs to be on DVD as my PS2 won't play CD based games ....grrrrr.

Did Icaruga (Ikaruga?) come out for PS2? If so, that one will drive you up the wall. Very old school, very intense.

Time Splitters 2.

Excellent 1st person shooter by the same people who did Goldeneye on the N64.

Even once the main story is finished, there are plenty of excellent little challenges (some are bizarre, others are just hilarious) with unlockable characters and levels to keep you interested.

Excellent multiplayer fun too!

An added bonus is that its been around a while now, so you can probably pick a copy up for peanuts.

Get a copy and you won't be disapointed - I've had mine for a while and still find myself going back to it.

cheers for the suggestions. Was more after a side scroller so R-type Final should be winging its way to me this week.

Might give Black a try but seen very mixed reviews and have always found 1st person shooters to be most successful on PC (mouse+keyboard controllers). The only exception for me has been golden eye.

Cool. Currently getting frustrated with R Type Final (in a good way). Absolutely awesome game. Will likely get Black and Time Splitters once I get off the sofa and to the shops

As mentioned Black is great.

Also check out Freedom Fighters. It was released years ago and can probably be bought for a fiver now but is one the best shooters I've ever played.

thats a great little game... very original..
I also like the Max Payne series...if only to pump in the weapon cheat...and drill the junkies full of bullets from the Uzi 9mm`s in each hand...and the odd grenade....
