EVO - Ten Greatest Icons
Discussion
ha ha ha ha ha... The informed motoring reader. The 997GT3 has only been here 5 minutes, nobody's driven it and already its one of the best cars of all time according to the readership of EVO. Up there with the Macca F1 apparently.
Obviously subscribing to the mystic Megg approach to such matters....
I vote for next years's 3.8 RSR. Surely that's a contender in the current top 100 as well!?

What do you expect people to do? Each vote for the best car or favourite car that they have personally driven?
Or would you have a survey in which the only people who are asked to vote are industry insiders and life members of the Mutual Love Club?
Perhaps you're against all polls?
What's the big deal? Folks are just saying what they like.
It sounds like the 997Gt3 & RS are more or less right out of the box,, as for previous generation cars,,,what about Mk1 brakes??...gearboxes? No wonder Mr Manthey
does such good business
Why the need to fit JRZ suspension on a car that was supposed to be track based and cost £85k before mods???
I don't quite get Evo sometimes, here they are marketing the new 997Gt3 then romanticising about the 2.7RS....a bit of a cliche.
2.7RS is undoubtedly a great car, the thing that is most obvious driving the early cars is just how light and responsive they are.

The Mk1 4 pot brakes are still excellent - and they were superlative for a car released in 1999. One would expect improvements to be made over the 4 years before the 6pot variant was released.
Wrt the gearbox, the Mk1 GT3 used the 993GT2 gearbox but with different ratios. Considering the GT3 trounced the competition in the FIA GT over the years from '99-'05, it's not unsurprising that there were improvements to be found in the Mk2 with better cooling and stronger (but not as nice feeling) steel synchros in '03. Nice that Porsche race R&D filtered down to the road models. With time and R&D, there are always components that can be improved upon in later years.
JRZ? I've only heard of one person singing their praises.
The article was to identify the icons. To echo another poster's sentiments in another thread, GT3 is fast becoming the halo brand for Porsche. Porsche was/is about racing and no other current Porsche model embodies that ethos as much as the GT3. Similar to the way the 2.7RS remains a definitive Porsche icon in sports car history.

Adrien, I agree GT3 is now the more iconic version of the Porsche range having taken over from the Turbo.....rightly so!
my comments were in response to your line,
"Besides, has there ever been a bad GT3? Or one that hasn't trounced the competition from the get-go?"
remarking that early cars with standard features are not a patch on the latest cars Evo is getting excited about,,hence the requirement for so many owners looking to "catch up" and modify their early cars.
In Glenns review after his 997 GT3 drive, what impressed me was that the factory is now selling a car which is more usable yet probably equally as capable as the previous generation GT3 after it has had the benefit of fettling at the leading german Gt3 tuning emporium......That is why I think Evo is getting so excited about the 997 version in particular...and of course there may be a slight marketing bias?

No idea about the marketing, but it's no secret that EVO love Porsche! Manthey are already fettling the 997GT3 to make it more uber analogue so it will be interesting to see in what ways it performs better than the standard digital equivalent.
I'm not sure owners are looking to "catch up" with the earlier cars, but rather just keep on improving what they have with time etc. My GT3 was boggo standard for quite a while and was fantastic to drive. Different, but equally thrilling as it is now. Modified cars extend the performance envelope, and sometimes feel quite different compared to the originals without losing what made them great in the first place. The latest Total911 article on the 993RS modified and unmodified was an interesting article on the merits of the 993RS. Standard is excellent, and T911 preferred the original, but I'm sure there are areas which can be improved upon as the blue one was, although it may not be everyones preference.

Steve is right, you are very serious today
Can't disagree......as you point out in your introduction of the F1 to Mr Meaden, there are too many factors to consider subjectively to arrive at a definitive conclusion.
Sometimes easier on the net to make judgement than the real world.
Do you think the Evo team were slightly awe struck that they were actually using a sorted F1 in their test and that it would have won, even if it hadn't turned a wheel??

Sorry if I'm being querelous, but I find it very irritating when big guys, experts, insiders, etc, make fun of ordinary people.
When it's the other way around, that's fine. Cool.
As we here on PH should know better than most, people are passionate about motoring. Most won't have the chance to race Porsches in a professional series, or to own GT3s or F1s.
It doesn't seem right to belittle the sincere opinions of petrolheads just because they have not had the opportunities that a few of us have had.

Have not seen the magazine yet, so I couldn't say.
It was my impression that the "winning" was just a matter of counting the votes in a poll on their website. No?

No, the F1 first, GT3 second were the EVO authors' opinions. The reader poll went something like this:
1) F1
2. F40
3. Zonda
4. Integrale
5. Veyron
6. NSX/R
7. 997GT3
8. 2.7RS
9. Integra Type-R
10. Skyline R32/33/34 GT-R
11. Carrera GT
12. RS4
13. 205GTI
14. M5 (V10)
15. Clio 182/Trophy
16. Enzo
17. Impreza P1
18. M3/CS (E46)
19. Caterham Superlight
20. 996GT3
21. ...
22...

Frankly, I couldn't give a toss what car won and comming from a one bedroomed flat in the East end of london feel quite comfortable in the knowlegde that I know what 'ordinary' people are all about. My point is that not many Jounalists have actually driven the 997GT3 let alone compared it to anything else in an objective test. On that basis, I find it amazing that It has found it's way into the top ten cars of all time from a readers poll. I dont regard myself as a big man but I give an honest opinion and my head is firmly on my shoulders and not up my own arse.

Steve, maybe I got the wrong end of the stick, but why then were you putting down "the informed motoring reader"?
