My friend is using an HP DVD 840 to create a DVD of some home movies. The DVD will play on the computer but not in the DVD player. I don't know anything about making DVDs. Does anyone know how to change the format or something so that the DVD will play on DVD players?

Check the disk format is it + or - ? Make sure the video and audio absolutely conform to the DVD specs (resolution, audio format), most software players on a computer are very forgiving of this most DVD players aren't.

Also make sure you're DVD player is set to region free if possible as the lack of CSS region code can cause 'issues' (hell a burnable disk is missing the whole CSS block).

I'd also suggest sticking to the big boys when it comes to burning tools, Nero, et al. As opposed to something like CD Burner XP Pro, which whilst free, caused my no end of problems burning video ISO's.

Follow up: What software are you using to create the DVD and/or encode the video?

Thanks, I'll try your suggestions. It's Nero.

What was the original movie file? MPEG 2. I tend to use Encore 2.0, Spruce Maestro or DVD Studio Pro to do the movies.

Are you choosing "Make your Own DVD-Video" or are you making a nero digital movie? Might be worth putting the disk in the PC open My Computer > right click on the DVD drive and click explore and then advise us on what files/folders show.

That appears to be the problem. There are two windows media audio/video .wmv files. I'll try to go through it with him tomorrow and see what he's doing. I'm guessing it has to be "Make your Own DVD-Video"?

The original files are .wmv I tried nero and chose create your own dvd, it made the dvd but it still will only work on the computer. I know the files have to be mpeg2 but I was reading the nero help and it seemed like nero is supposed to convert them automatically? Do I have to change the files to mpeg2 before I start making the dvd in nero?
Thanks

When the DVD is put in the DVD player does it recognise it at all ? Is it being created in NTSC or PAL, assume you want NTSC for your location. Is it an old DVD player ? lots of the older (and even newer) DVD players dont support +R disks. My very old DVD player wont play +R or CD-R but happily plays DVD-R.

One other funny - I sometimes find if I burn my DVD's at high speed the DVD player wont play them for some reason. I keep the burn speed down to 4x as a max and everything is fine.

No, the dvd player won't read it, it just says error. Nero says it is being created in NTSC format. The dvd player is pretty new, and is supposed to support different types of discs. Not sure about +r though. It says it can play vcd's. maybe I can try making one of those.
