Hi.
Good vid.
a question if thats ok.
I've only ever come across 1 rally car in the flesh. When the garage technician fired up the car it sounded awesome. Lots of crackles and pops. When the tech started up a different & more powerful road going evo, it sounded like a regular road car. It just sat there idling.
I've often wondered why the rally car sounded glorious, but the more powerful road car sounded calm. Why did that rally car sound so brutal?

exhausts and timing
big f off exhausts make a car sound louder. but are not "community friendly" so mr manufacturer puts on a user friendly silencer.
unless its a noise regulated race , mr rallly driver doesn't give a sh...... toss as a silencer restricts power, and also sounds too polite!
race cars have the timing set differently to road cars, because the power comes in differently if the timing is set differently.
on a road going car, it needs to be smooth and driveable at comparativly low speeds, ie upto 70 mph on our roads and motorways,
but a race car needs power in a different way to a road car, and is thrashed to death in all gears, so the power needs to be further up the rev range, the trade off is that it sounds, and runs like a bag of spanners at idle but sings like a welsh male voice choir when thraped.
this is all layman speak, so any experts are welcome to add to or clarify this, but thats about the size of it.

The main reason for the popping and banging on a turbo rally car is the anti-lag system. Large turbo's take some time to spin up, so when off throttle the engine management continues to provide fuel, retards the timing by 30 degrees or so and as a result the fuel is ignited as the exhaust valves are already open providing a sort of controlled explosion to keep the turbo spinning. Doesn't give you any more power but makes the car a lot more drivable, the downside is increased turbo wear but as long as the system isn't too aggresive and is turned off when not in a stage shouldn't be too bad.
Popping and banging.....£££££'s
British forest, rain, Mk1's/11's, BDA's etc. ...Priceless!
