Fuel guesstimator

For the past week my fuel gauge has been working correctly (well, as correctly as can be expected in a wedge) until it gets to just over half a tank, then it goes mental for a minute or so flying up and down the gauge rapidly, then goes straight to zero (where it would be with the ignition off) and stays there until it is filled up past half a tank again.
Got 44 litres one in fill up, so it must have been just about empty
!

Sounds like the sender is worn I have a spare that should fit your car I will stick it in the boot if you are going to Meriden ??

Thanks, I might be at Meriden, just seeing if I can fit it around hospital visiting hours.

Chris I repaired the sender on Rubin, the wire winding will have worn through and you need too rewind it but with the right sort of wire.
I went to the breakers yard and got the sender unit from a mini cus they are easy to access and used the wire from that. I rang all over the place to buy a new sender, but no luck.

I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to make it to Meriden today, pity, I'd have liked to have seen your new car.
Is the sender easy to get at and how do you get at it?

Chris if you get the rear jacked and supported as high as you can its not too bad. Its mounted on the drivers side tank, half way up, between the tanks, above and in front of the diff. I know of 2 types that have been fitted, one fits with a knock round ring type thing (Rubin the 400 was like this) and another thats fixed with 6-8 pins. Mark it b4 you take it off, so you put it back on the right way up, and as long as you have 6ft arms with 3 extra joints its easy
Dumb thing to say, but with no gauge its not easy, be sure your tanks are towards empty !!!
If its the bolt fitting type send me your details and I will post you this spare one down.
I hope the hospital thing is not too serious

Haven't looked at it yet, solution so far has been to fill up a little more often.
If you've still got the sender I'd like to give it a go, if that's okay? Are you going to be at the bulls head tomorrow?
