(bad) vibrations

Since the dealer fixed my exhaust in place (it kept turning to one side) I have a lot of vibrations in the car under heavy acceleration. It's (almost) certain it's coming from the (modified)exhaust and I'm wondering what I can do about it.

What I've seen is that the exhaust is mounted to the chassis by a big plate under the muffler; are there supposed to be any rubbers in there?
I have the idea that now the muffler is connected directly to the chassis tubes and this is causing the vibrations, is that possible?

Hi gerjo,

if the exhaust is modified (piped) the casing may have split. they open them on the top side and removed baffling etc. I had this some years back.

1/2 hour job.

also check that the exhaust is clearing the body everywhere. we had a guy at the ring who thought his suspension was knacked, turned out to be the exhaust under load.

yes, rubber bobbins that fit on the chassis plate to the exhaust can.

Hi gergo,I fitted a new JP exhaust system in February and also had vibration from the same area.I noticed the rubber mounts were soft and cracked so the big plate was fouling the silencer box.I fitted new mounts, problem solved.I sent off for them from David Geralds,only a few quid.Should have about 5mm gap between plate and box with new ones. hi Andy,
The exhaust isn't split (I didn't cut open the old muffler but I replaced it with a new smaller one).
Indeed I think the exhaust is connected with the body hence the vibrations.

Hi Dave,
Where are these rubber mounts placed? Is it between the silencer box and the chassis?

Hi,your replacement system should have three angled plates welded to silencer box[two at the front and one to the rear]and each bracket should have approx 1 inch holes in them.The rubber mounts are egg shaped and split into two.They fit either side of the bracket,the three bolts then go through the large plate then through the new mounts fit nyloc nuts and tighten.Don't over tighten them and squash them or the silencer box will foul the large plate again.Good luck.
