Hi,

What's the most driver focused MX5 I could get for £5k? I'm thinking largely of factory standard UK cars, but might be tempted by mods and imports. Not too keen on turbos because of the lag.

Chris.

Hi Chris,

don't write turbo's off because of lag, on the smaller turbo cars, there is boost from 1500rpm, hitting full boost by 2500. If you like linearity, why not a Supercharger.

the only reason i say this is for 5k you are lookig at a very early mk2 or a late mk1, and in terms of sportyness they will be much of a muchness from the factory. my advise would be a modded mk1 SC car that has had the suspension and brakes done. you should get a decent one for £5k, hopefully around an L or an M plate.

Look for an imported 'v-spec' car that will have blistein suspension.

pick of the bunch if you can find one, is an RS-Ltd (import only) mk1... carbon-fibre recaros, bilstein suspension, and a few other choice bits...

this one has been tweeked (turbo!!), but you get the idea:

I suppose if you keep the turbines spinning it might be an option - does that mean you get pretty much naturally aspirated levels of throttle response from 2,500rpm? IIRC the MX5 engine is quite revvy with a 7,500rpm red line or something, so keeping it above 2,500 would be a must on any decent roads anyway.

I had been thinking about a supercharged mk1 - haven't seen any though, so it's good to know they're in my sort of price range.

Most of the forced induction cars seem to be 1.6s - is this because they're lighter or something? I suppose if the power output is determined pretty much by boost pressure then you might as well pick up a cheaper donor car at the cost of a few hundred CC's.

Not looking to go massively powerful - I reckon 160/170hp would be as much as I'd want to give. Something which gives similar performance to the BBR's, but with a more linear delivery.

What are the favoured brake/suspension mods? Should stress I'm looking for fast road rather than track use on bumpy, broken UK tarmac!!

GAZ coilovers seem the best option, I wish I waited and got them instead of the AGX adjustable I got, apparently they have a good range of adjustablity and are very comfortable on etither road or track, they do a specific track set, so I guess the standard GAZ kit is really a road developed coil over kit so should really be able to be bettered.

You will see loads of options for power, forced induction can get you up to 300BHP now but at a price and I would suggest that you don't need to spend a load of money on power to have fun in a 5.

1) Tidy car=3k
2) Suspension upgrade= £500ish
3) Decent tyres and geo=£300ish
4) Chassis and top mount braces= 250ish
5) K&N free flow filter= £60
6) Skim .030" off the head and decoke= £250ish
7) Rolling road set up timing etc= £150ish

That would get you about 130BHp of well handling car for under 5k and I tell you hooning and trackdays are just as much fun in the 5 as my TVR Chimaera costing more than double the money.
