When to report possible damage to police?
Discussion
When I got to the gym this morning I noticed some damage to my passenger wing mirror. It was cracked and looked like something had hit it (or I'd hit something). I don't remember seeing this damage before, so I've concluded it happened on the way to the gym.
Is this something I need to report to the police, as it's a possible err accident? Is this one of those situations where I have to report something within 24hrs?
I don't remember any contact with anyone or anything, but something obviously made the damage.
I'm happy to report it, but as I don't have any real details will a report actually be taken? I guess I was hoping that whomever made the damage also reported it and we can be put in touch?
In the past I'd never have thought twice about it, but i think reading this forum makes you paranoid that you need to report everything to the police!

Why do I get the impression R32 reading your post that there is a little bit more to this than you are letting on.....but then I always a suspicious burgher.
But to answer your question. As you will know S170 RTA 88 (abreviated) requires anybody involved in an accident to STOP.
If DAMAGE is caused to any OTHER vehicle then certain details are required to be exchanged and if this is not done the matter should be reported to Plod asap and in any case within 24hrs. (Injury aspect/Insurance ignored). So what you say if someone else hit your vehicle causing damage then it is for them to report.
Failure to stop - fail to report are two separate offences.
As far as you are concerned Harding v Price [1948]is relevant in that a person charged with failing to stop/report can bring forward the defence that he did not know or suspect that an accident had occurred. If the Court is in doubt whether or not a defendant knew or suspected that he had been involved then he should be acquitted.
This principle was also applied in Hampson v Powell [1970].

thanks dvd.
Nothing suspicious about the post, i've just got myself thinking that either i clipped someones mirror, or someone clipped mine.
Anyway, I went and reported it at my local police station. Hopefully should some other party report an incident we now have each others details.

I can't believe you can smash a wing mirror whilst driving and not notice.
You don't drive a bin lorry do you?
Those feckers can wreck cars without noticing. Probably get distracted by all those flashing lights and that incessant fecking beeping

I did precisely that more than 10 years ago and the office on the desk gave me a lecture about no such thisn as an accident and threatened to caution me. I was invited to agree that no such inceident had taken place. I reasoned afterwards that he really did not want to bother filling in the forms.
