Have a whine coming from the back, which is getting a bit louder (or i am noticing it more)
I first thought it was bearings, but i had them inspected (and replaced) but same thing, (they said the bearings were fine really), like a humming / whineing / wohhhming, noticble more on corners.. suspect its the Diff..
Also, I have a slight, rattle/scrapey scratchy, on clutch... on release/depress when moving, noticbly when moving down / up the box at roundabouts... was thinking maybe worn release bearings..
a) would either of these be warrantyable, with a WH Warranty.. , and IF not, any idea as to costs ?
b) does this SOUND like my diagnosis might be right ? anyone else had either of the above, what should I look out for.
c) anyone got any other suggestions for fixes ? car had its 36k service 800 miles ago, should the Diff oil have been changed ? can I check easily without ramps if it can ? (lost my bible!!! new one on order!) ditto clutch?
Thanks

Jamie, sounds like the diff and clutch release bearing from what you say - no idea as to what the warranty would coer - but think these may be wear and tear items - cost about £600 for diff and slightly less for clutch (from memory).
Went here to check the service schedule for 36k Chim service, and no, diff oil not checked or topped up.
HTH. Best of luck with the problem(s)
Hmm,
just looked thru my Bible, (found again)
And whilst it makes mention that the Diff oil should be changed every 12000 miles (tho the TVR service schedule seems to say otherwise
)
I cant find where I a) Check the current Oil Level, or B) Drain and refill it.
It makes mention of what oil to use, and how to check the gearbox oil level, using the wire, but not the diff...
Anyone? is it an easy home job ? would like to try and replace the oil meself ideally... thanks

Hi Jamie, do you know what diff you have???, if it is the gkn diff which I think has the cooling fins on the back then the filler plug is half way up on the back of it. the draining plug is at the bottom below it!! It is quite awkward to get at but is possible!!!. The plugs are 1/2 inch socket size I think. The socket should plug straight in.
hope this helps

Can you describe the diff noise more?
I have a low whine noise from the rear which pulses, humm.....humm....humm.... about every second. No difference round corners and it stops if I declutch, so could be diff or (preferably) exhaust vibration.
It is going for service this week so I should get a diagnosis.

JamieBeeston said: It started more as a whooooooowm whoooooowm increaseing with speed, akin to that of a dodgy bearing, but I had the bearing replaced...
now, it sounds more like a straight cut metro / mini gearbox, like a whine... getting louder as i drive faster in a gear...

My non-expert diagnosis would be worn diff bearings. I can't see an oil top up/change fixing this. It's not an expensive job, 2hrs labour each way and the work on the bench (say 500 all in?). Try Bernie at Competition Transmission near Luton (www.gearboxman.com) - he knows his stuff.
My diff bearings went, constant whining changing pitch with speed is what I had. I also had a hairline crack in the crown wheel and pinion causing it to mesh badly when hot (hard to test on the bench). Now I have had 2 rebuilds and it still whines. Expert diagnosis by Bernie last week (using microphones attached to all parts of the transmission) diagnosed a noisy prop UJ now ... hopefully all fixed (At last) this Friday. In my case the suspicion is that the prop UJ was 'bent' out of it's normal operating range when the diff was removed. I hope my will be sorted this time, or the diff's coming out again (at least this extra work isn't costing me owt!). I've been driving the car between all these repairs and it's been fine, but noisy!
I suggest you get yours professionaly checked - Bernie appears to be THE man WRT transmissions in Chims/Griffs.
