Rich...2006 version of Redex, the original "Upper cylinder Lubricant".
Catalytic converters work at very high temperatures, some fluids form the engine must get entrained in the gass stream and then hit and stick on the cat in a cold engine. However, once the catalyst reaches operating temperature they will burn off leaving the catalyst surface clean.
Converters should not become clogged with carbon deposits unless the engine is very bbadly out of tune.
Catalysts do degrade over time, small parts of the catalyst break up and blow down the pipe with the exhaust. Over a long period they are erroded to such an extent that they break up and fall out. To a ccertain extent this surface errosion makes the surface rougher, creating a higher surface area and more "high energy " sites for adsorbed gass atoms or molecules to boggle around on. Thus making the catalyst more effective. Eventually the erosion removes so much material that there is a net fall in surface area and performance will drop off. At this stage the converters need replacing.
Damage to catalysts is often caused by using the wrong fuel. Lead additaves for axample "poison" the cat by depositing lead in its metalic form onto the surface. Lead does not catalyse the reactions necessary to clean up the cars emissions. Once coated in lead the cat stops working and it has to be replaced.
Can you be sure that the contents of this little green bottle are safe to use in your fuel?
