Which Photo Printer?
Discussion
Just seen an ad in the paper this morning (Currys ir one of that group iirc) for the Selphy 810 at 39.99.
The lessers Selphys are dye-sub 3 colour printers with kits that establish a price per print - the cartridge will produce a fixed number of prints and you get enough dedicated paper for that number in the pack.
The ad referred to above suggests a print cost or 27p per print.
The Canon info shows that the 810 uses the long life (if used with Canon paper, etc., etc.) ChromaLife 100 dye inks - the same as the much larger photo printing specialised machines. So, effectively on paper it is a smaller version of my Pixma iP6600D limited to 6x4 (10x15 cm)prints. Which means that for 40 quid you should get cracking print quality and yet be able to buy alternative lower cost paper supplies. Same edit and card reading facilities as the bigger machine I have as far as I can tell.
If the size of the unit is not important you might like to consider the large printer anyway. Should be able to pick one up for about 70 to 80 (with 60 quids worth of inks, from the Canon Outlet shop on eBay. But if size is important the smaller 810 may be the better choice and probably more economical with ink usage for low volume use.
As ever the choice in the market makes the decision quite a tricky one unless you have some very specific requirements to narrow the choice.
