Discussion
bought an ipod for an xmas pressie and want to dump a load of music on it. problem is my music is all organised in folders representing artist/album (i keep the files as raw .wavs). itunes seems happy to convert the format - but it's also making a complete mess of my artist/album file structure (it's ignoring it completely). There must be some way i can get it to do what i want?? please help! thanks!
Depends - you can edit the tags on each MP3 - loads of faff though.
don't forget in iTunes, if you click on the artist in the file list you can overtype the name. I had this when I started using iTunes - loads of albums came up listed with the main artist & a co-singer, and was listed as a separate album for those tracks.
Simply retitle the artist or album the same for all the tracks in one album - voila.
Don't also forget that iTunes uses it's own folder for music, so your original carefully crafted files should be unmolested elsewhere on your hard drive.
(To save space I have now removed all my previous WMA files, after copying & converting to MP3 for iTunes. I have backed them all up to DVD!)
Check the quality setting in iTunes as well - when ripping CDs it defaults to a rubbish bit rate - sounds like am radio! Change it in Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Importing.

thanks for all the replies - with regard to 'keep itunes music folder organised' i tick that on, and drop an artist/album/track folder (i.e. 2 folders and one track) onto itunes - i can see the track but the artist/album columns are still blank - would you expect them to be populated with the folder names? also trying a python tool called rebuild_db i found on web - but not having any luck yet. problem with editing by hand is i'll be here all week....

No, iTunes doesn't consider the path part of the album/artist information (or at least I've never seen it do that), you will need to enter those yourself I'm afraid.

oh well. thanks though. if there was an alternative that looked as nice but worked with simple folder drag and drop i'd get one of those instead probably. there isn't though - not that i know of anyway.
There are different ways to fill in the correct tags without itunes. I haven't tried any for Windows, but you could start with MusicBrainz or with the masstagger from the Foobar2000-player.

Extracting Information from Relative File Paths:
As suggested I have included a small section on how to extract different values from their relative file paths. To do so I will use the following example path to extract information from
...GenreArtistAlbum[Date] 1_Title.mpc
...
I'd use amaroK for tag guessing or for filling the tags from path information, but it's IIRC not available for Windows. As suggested I have included a small section on how to extract different values from their relative file paths.
