Can any anyone recommend a decent Networked Attached Storage product? Will need to support about 2 or 3 PC's and a few laptops for storing backups of home videos, photographs, work files, etc, and preferably backup boot disk images. I'm looking to spend up to 500 quid, give or take, and after something that works with Windows and Linux and has at least raid 1, mirrored disks. I'm not too conecerned with efficiency, but more concerned with being easily and reliably being able to restore the system if there is a problem. Would prefer it to use non-proprietry disks as well.

Cheers, James.

Whatever you do DO NOT get a Netgear SC101. They maybe relatively cheap but they are a big pile of crap.

I'm looking at getting one of these too, but have read reports that the NV is quite loud - is this true? Will it be OK sitting in my lounge, or will I need to hide it away in a cupboard?

Hhhmm, usual thing, depends what you're used to. I've spent loads on one of those fanless Hush machines so it's far too loud for my lounge, but I'd say it's just a bit less than a quiet desktop machine.

Cupboard it is then.

I've been looking into this but my requirement is to have the NAS wireless only i.e. not physically connected to a computer and hidden around the house - probably in the attic. If this route interests you then have a look at the following products:

Iomega - excellent solution but too high a capacity and too expensive for my needs.

www.iomega-europe.com/item?SID=212a15b705ac9e41d64c846ccc48bff6228:4735&sku=204133351

D-Link - this looks a possibility but it's very slow at 3 to 4MB/sec.

www.dlink.com/products/?pid=377&sec=0

Tritton - Seems to fit the bill for me but can't find anywhere in the UK that sells it.

FreeNAS.

www.freenas.org/

Use an old PC and stick as many hardrives in as it will support.

Supports Raid1.

Should be able to spend more money on disk space and less on the system.

I run one at home as a file system for distributed media stuff, runs great!

www.scan.co.uk do them. They're ok, but a bit slow and as you can only have 2 drives in them, you obviously loose half the storage space as raid 1 is your only safe option.

scratchchin the 5200 looks great, but doesn't seem to support Slimserver which is a shame

I've just ordered a Qnap TS-101 400gb drive (comes with Slimserver) with a Squeezebox 3 from Ripcaster.

I also have an Iomega Storcenter 500gb drive which is *very* noisy. I initially had to get a replacement drive from Iomega, and their customer service left a lot to be desired. Not recommended, plus I'd have had to hack it to install Slimserver.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was originally looking at the Buffalo Terastation Pro amongst others, but the Infrant ReadyNAS NV+ sounds quite appealing.

Cheers, James.

yes Buffalo is cheaper but you get what you pay for. Slower than the Infrant by a bit. Mate has a Buffalo and is now eBaying it and getting an NV+.... tells you something.
