Why not get into Fun Cup racing?

Just £1,250 will buy you a race drive

You've had the PC game, maybe the slot-car track or the radio-controlled racer for Christmas -- but there's nothing quite beats the real thing: a race seat in a close and competitively fought motor racing series.

Now one of the teams in the 2007 Uniroyal Fun Cup series is making car nuts' New Year's resolutions affordable.

"Every petrolhead wants to race at least once in his or her life - and a seat in a racing car for a single session or a whole season is a lot less costly that anybody might think," said motor race team owner Phil Martindale, who runs the Martindales and Trucks2Go Uniroyal Fun Cup team.

A double stint drive in a UK round of the Uniroyal Fun Cup series -- each race is four or five hours driving an Audi-based single-seater under a VW Beetle bodyshell -- costs from around £1,250.

"That's around four hours behind the wheel of a race car each weekend: practice, qualifying and the race itself," said Martindale.

"And before anybody starts wondering about race licences and qualifications and what have you -- that's all included in the price. And they can stop worrying about coming across would-be Formula 1 stars sharing the grid too: the vast majority of drivers are complete novices or fairly new, and the cars are not crazily fast - it's all about driving skills and fun.

"We'll get them their race licence, their clothing, practice and qualifying and then a race seat at circuits like Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Donington Park, Croft and Oulton Park."

Around £7,500 buys a whole season of double-stint driving for one person at each of six race weekends, including testing and hospitality.

Around £4,500 buys a car for an entire race weekend -- that can mean four friends achieving that New Year's resolution. But the ultimate has to be the £30,000 package: an entire season's racing in their own liveried car. In each case, the price is the all-in cost.

Martindale owns a number of cars that compete in the Uniroyal Fun Cup - a race series that provides cost-effective, close, exciting and, above all, good fun racing for all teams competing.

The cars are purpose-designed single-seaters with a strong tubular steel chassis, mildly modified super strong Audi/VW engines and gearboxes, race brakes and fully adjustable suspension wrapped in VW Beetle look-alike glass fibre body.

The races are all endurance, typically four and five hours in the UK, complete with pit stops and all the associated drama. Teams vary from two to six drivers in the UK and thanks to carefully designed rules, however many there are in a team the chance of success is exactly the same.

And with the car engines and gearboxes sealed and regulations strictly controlled, the racing is super-close and the running costs remarkably low.

"It's not Formula 1 speed or cost -- but it is very similar to Formula 1 in format: practice, qualifying and race over the course of a weekend, usually two days but often three. Now, what's going to be the bigger business buzz? The Christmas gift video game -- or the racing resolution achieved?" said Martindale.

Race in the series myself - Just a fantastic place for some really exciting, competitive racing, whatever your experience. Cars are great to develop car control and race craft whilst still being superb fun for experienced pedalers. I shared a car this year with a novice as well as a British GT winner and FIA World Sports Car racer - we all had a ball for relatively little budget compared to the seat time. We're looking to run a second car this year too.

If anyone is interested in finding out more about the realities of the championship don't hesitate to pm me...

Spa would be on top of the costs quoted.... I reckon you're looking around £3k for a seat in the 25 hours

I've done two races in them now, Spa in 2002 and Rockingham in 2005 and both were an absolute hoot. Infact racing the Beetles at Spa re-ignited a rather burnt out flame for what racing should really be all about. But you have to like eating Belgiam Waffles or you'll starve.

At Rockingham I went from 18th to leading the race after 40 minutes of hard work but this was only possible because of the nature of these cars and the closeness of the racing. You get such big tows that you can't get away from anyone and likewise if you get your head down you can make ground up fast, but once in the lead your the guy being towed. Mega fun and recomended to anyone who enjoys motorsport.

Hmm, I've hopefully got a load of cash coming from a compnay share scheme next year. I really should do something sensible and possibly house related with it, but that 6 race deal sounds like fun....!scratchchin

Paul Rose's team (organiser for the Uniroyal Fun Cup) finished 7th at Spa this year, top British team out of all I think - www.funcup.co.uk/default.asp

Met him quite a few times back in the Slick 50 road saloon and early Radical days, very nice guy. He also bought a set of BMW alloys off me after I'd put some new ones on my car

It shouldn't matter but i just don't like the look of the cars - perhaps they should update the image with something like an Audi TT look.

I've been racing in the Fun Cup for a couple of years now, on top of competing in the VdeV series in France. I have to say that the Fun Cup racing is awesome (as is the VdeV, of course), and as well as being a lot of fun, is a good way to learn race craft. Never a dull moment, and £ per minute in the seat is pretty darned good.

Blatant ad - I do happen to have a second hand Fun Cup car for sale if anyone's interested. Will be hiring a drive this year at the two rounds I can do (got serious calendar clashes this time around) with a view to getting a new car for 2008.

Did Snetterton and Spa in 2003. Mint!

Found out the reverse lights don't make great pathfinders as I deposited the front splitter during a rearward entry into the kitty-litter at Pouhon (sp?)...

so that was Lap 1! It was dark on my first stint. That's the excuse I'm sticking to. Apparently looking at the inside of the track as opposed to the gravel helps (tis true, no more incidents in remainder of race).

Pennies are being saved as we speak. It's a toss up between this and legends, but Uniroyal Cup/VW Fun Cup gives you more track time per pound.
