My pal has just turned 40, and his missus has paid for him to fulfil a long-standing ambition to learn to ride a bike. I don't know too much about bikes, but would like to get him a gift which will be useful in his new interest.

Does anyone have any appropriate suggestions?

Many thanks

maybe some new gloves or give him the choice by getting him a voucher from a bike shop so he can go in and pick what he wants.

A tad late, but was in Makro yesterday, and they have bike-lifts (those things for lifting bikes up so are easier to work on) for about £40 + VAT. Thought it worth a mention.
