As much as it hurts, I think I need to sell the Chimaera as it's been garaged up for over a year now and I can't really afford to get it back on the road. Good thing is that a mate from work is interested in buying it and so I'll be able to help him work on it and have the occasional drive in it!!

Anyway, I need to give him a price. It's an N-reg 4.0 Chimaera with 102,000 miles on it. Hasn't broken down on me since owning at at 65,000 miles 4 years ago. (Manek, editor of PH was previous owner!). Currently has no MOT or tax, needs front upper and lower ball joint, two (maybe four) tyres, a front end respray and some minor electrical work.

Good points are that it's been remapped by Mark Adams, has been de-precatted, has Zertec exhaust, Type-r headlight upgrade, rear afterburners, lot's of Leven bits, nice Pioneer head unit with decent 6x9 speakers in the rear.

So anyone think £5500 is unreasonable, or more or less?

Cheers

Dan

Hmm - from what you've described I would say 5.5K was a bit rich, maybe 4K - why not ask your friend what he wants to pay you?

It could easily cost the same again to put right.

I hate to say it, but that sounds a bit pricey to me. Chimaera prices have been in freefall unfortunately.
To put it another way, assuming you:

Did the tyres - £400
Respray - £500
Electrics - £100
Ball Joints - £200
Service - £600
MOT/TAX - £200

Would you car be worth 5500 + 2000 = £7500 with >100k miles?

IMO yes! Even at this time of year and to a mate.

Although I'd still recommend that he has a look at a few others to gauge the market. Don't forget he's going to get free maintenance for life with this one, or at least for as long as your friendship holds out.

Hmm, well considering you could get this:

www.pistonheads.com/sales/115277.htm

or this:

www.pistonheads.com/sales/113015.htm

For similar money (once the extra has been spent fixing yours) i'd say that you're charging too much, especially as yours is high mileage too!

This '99 car www.barons-auctions.com/lots/T873UMA.htm went for £7k a few weeks ago, and after auction fees the seller will have got less than £7k for it, so I think your price is too high, sorry.

This has got me thinking as I am hoping to sell my formula red 1995 400 in early 2007 (although I realise that its best waiting til the sun is shining). I was going to advertise it at £10k - is this too high a price?

It has lots of leven, upgraded head and tail lights, the engine has just been 'rebuilt' (everything but the block replaced), tyres and leather interior in a good state, the rest of the car in excellent condition. It has done 60,000 miles, and has been garaged for the last 4 years I have had it at least.

What do you think?

Ive bought Cerbera with snapped crank, and is currently having 6.3 Stroked LS motor installed at Dyno Torque in Brum, as well as a chassis rebuild, it should be ready for springish, so its got to go before then.

Dan, I fear there may be more wrong with your car than you think. Sitting a Chimaera idle for over a year can only add to the list of things to fix. Clutch master cylinder (rust on input shaft causing hydraulic fluid leak into footwell), rotted out exhaust internals (due to puddling of water around the baffles), sticky injectors (held closed for too long), seized stepper motor (due to lack of exercise), etc., etc.

You should also expect that some faults won't show up straight away so your buyer is taking a risk. How good is your relationship with him?

As a Chimaera owner it hurts me to say this but in the end your car should be worth between £6k & £7k once it is back on the road. Getting it back on the road will dig deeply into your pockets. Selling it as it stands I couldn't comment as I personally wouldn't take the risk.

I see your point, there probably is a couple more bit wrong with it now than previously. Although it has been sitting in a bone dry garage since last January.

It's not really too big a issue though, as the chap who's thinking of buying loves fixing cars in his garage, and if my motor was in perfect working order he wouldn't actually buy it at all!! Most of the fun of owning a car for him is tinkering in the garage, once it's working he gets bored of a car very quickly! So a Tiv is perfect for him!!
