Does anyone know where I can get some advice on linear encoder, optical or proximity type sensors? I need to come up with an application that will accurately measure axle rotation in a harsh environment

The technical guys at Pepperl & Fuchs should be able to answer any questions you might have.

www.pepperl-fuchs.com

Edited to add that Rotary Encoders might be a good place to start.

You could try the technical dept at Omron. I pretty much use their sensors on all the machines at work.

There are different ways of getting an output from a sensor so the choice depends on the application.
