Hi guys.

How many CSL's were made? Of that run how many were blk and how many were s/g? How many ended up in the UK? Lots of questions but I know you guys have the answer!

Many thanks.

I believe there were 1500 made worldwide - 422 came to the UK. I think it was something like 25% were black sapphire and 75% Silver Grey.

Correct. Originally 400 cars were allocated to the UK, then BMW UK at the time requested 200 more cars (effectively reducing the allocation to other countries), and finally BMW declared that 422 were imported between June '03 and Dec '03. There are probably 400 or so cars left in circulation. On an impromtu survey on BM3W (where at one time nearly 70% of all new CSLs were registered), we found approximately 25% of them to be Saphire Black. Most people ordered them in Silver Grey because this showed the carbon fibre off in contrast, and also many people had already owned or were famililar with the M3 in 'carbon black' and so saphire black seemed plain by comparison.

Originally there were just over 1100 customers who registered interest and the initial allocation was insufficient, but many of these were speculators or were scared off my the first magazine reviews, so in fact BMW only sold around 150 cars at full list price with the remaining cars being supplied to dealers who were allowed to register them and then reduce the price (down from £59k to around £52k). Some customers received compensation when they complained to BMW, but most didn't.

If you find a car with a newer registration than '53, then this has either been sat at a dealers unregistered, used as demo vehicle at the BWM Power driving days (at Prodrive Warwick) or were one of a few dozen that were parked outside at Rockingham for a year or so. I've even seen some as late registered as '05, which really begs the question about where they were kept for over a year.

In most countries the CSL has been a good depreciator - even here in the UK the average car has retained nearly 60% of its original value. Other countries (such as South Africa I believe), where the numbers supplied were significantly less, the values have been even higher.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Australia has only 12 CSLs! Hardly seems doing it for so few but would be pretty cool to own one of only 12 out there.

Australia got 23 CSLs but we imported our out of the UK so it is now at 24.

See this site for the breakdown as best we know it.

The scary thing was that within the first year £60k cars (and most were £60k) were worth £40k, falling to as little as £30k within a further six months for the most haggard vehicles.

Now, a nice CSL will cost around £35k ? After three years that's not so bad --- and great news for those who paid £40k 18 months ago !

What would mine be worth then if i sold privately?

53-plater in black, 11,700 genuine miles from new, 2 owners, pretty much immaculate condition throughout, graduated tint windscreen, reverse park sensors, climate control, cd/radio.

New battery and all ecu updates done last week.
