bad year for cerbs
Discussion
if there was a bad year for cerbs what was it ,i know all tivs have a few probs now and then but was there a realy bad year ,ive been told that p regs were a cluster of probs anyone got any thing to add,all so is it better to get a cerb with highsih miles with history or lower miles with small history.if its been used and got history been well looked after.
History demonstrating meticulous maintenance is best, by a known independent specialist or dealer servicing. Mileage is less important, since some 4.2 and 4.5 Cerbs have done over 100k, on the original engine and most seem to be very durable in engine terms, the clutch being the main expensive consumable. Some early 4.2s suffered crank problems, but I've not heard of one going recently, I believe the problem was rectified in 1998, so buy a 1998 and on car if you can (someone correct me here if I'm wrong). The condition of the chassis, particularly on older cars, is also important to check (outriggers and the area around the bell housing and gear box, plus the wishbones).

Check that the tyres are on the right way round, the correct number of bolts are holding the bell housing in place and that all the correct paper work is in good order. There are a few more things to check but I'm sure someone will be along shortly with a definitive list.
Gut instinct is also useful so don't have a curry the night before you buy! A lesson to us all.

i have it from an informed source (who prepared many tuscan race cars) and still runs AJP powered race cars that the 97 cracks were not weaker than the later ones-he reckons that is a myth.
Really, I understood the journals on the early 4.2 have a smaller diameter than the later ones, post 98., after which the 4.2 and 4.5 share the same crank
. They pretty much are all machined cast cranks, very rare ones have billet
, I also understand there are some even rarer billet smaller journal cranks out there too. Never heard of a later larger journal crank snapping, billet or cast, but plenty of early one's have snapped.
This is what I like to hear - Cerb owners who havnt had problems. I suppose the purpose of a forum is to help owners with their issues and as a result a newby like me is gonna get a little nervous about the longevity of the brand after reading a few threads about breakdowns and such. But it is comforting to hear about all the owners who have never had a problem outside of the usual general automotive hiccups.
So come on - lets hear from all you peeps who have had trouble free Cerb motoring.
