just to ask how is the best way to either copy a CD in my collection or download a song and ensure when copyed onto a Ipod you get the best Bit rate. I have seen 192kbps, which seems to be the norm which the odd CD I copy onto the PC. how can I get better such as 320kpbs that I have also seen?

thanks

If you use a great piece of freeware called CDex, you can choose the bitrate when you rip your cd from 44 all the way up to 320 (or 500 if your player supports the Ogg Vorbis format).

For CDs, you simply run iTunes and import it via that before synching your iPod. There's a Preferences option in the menu to let you choose the bitrate from preselected ones or create a custom one.
For downloads - you're at the mercy of whatever bitrate the file has been encoded at. Most legal sites offer 128 with some doing 192. Others such as the Russian sites (trying to be forced to cease and desist) can offer most albums at whatever rate you want, the remainder are preset at 192 generally.

160kbps or higher is noticably better sounding than 128kbps or lower,192kbps is a great alrounder.
