My free 28day Talk Talk antivirus software is about to run out. I can continue with them for £2/month. Was just wondering if there are any better or free ones?

Cheers

This is so going to be moved, but AVG (Grisoft) do a free anti virus. Google either to find it.

Agree with nw, go the AVG route, far better than the Norton stuff I'd paid for before. Just need a decent mail anti spam bit of software now.

Its tiny. By that, I mean it doesn't bloat around slowing your system down with useless bits and pieces. It finds virii, kills them, and thats that.

In other words, not a resource hog. A proper bone-fide application that does only what it says on the tin.

Thanks guys, just downloading the AVG software now.

Does it matter it doesn't come with a firewall? As you can probably tell I don't know much about this kinda thing!

Don't try Zonealarm. It'll swallow everything up and leave you with the same processing power as a calculator.

My advice is to use the XP firewall (control panel>security), and then go to www.grc.com and run their 'shields up' tests.

Oh, and don't open unsolicited attachments in emails.

bizarre really that microsoft make just about everything for pc's but they dont make anti virus software. why is that?

also is it true if you have an apple mac you dont need anti virus software as there arent any virus's for macs? they only target windows?

MS does have an anti-virus offering as part of a subscription service, but as far as I know they don't have a boxed product you can buy.

For Macs, I don't think there are any viruses in the wild, but there have been proof-of-concepts done in the past. My impression is that it's not a worry at the moment, but that it would be prudent to keep an eye on it rather than just assume our Macs are invulnerable.

Along the same lines, there have been viruses for ages now that specifically targetted Norton anti-virus, and I read a post on here a couple of weeks ago saying that there is now one that targets AVG. I guess as soon as anything gets high-profile enough, someone will have a go at it.

Nod32 for virus - it doesn't miss viruses, unlike most others.

Kerio for firewall, controls outbound as well as inbound, as well as many other features.

Used AVG for antivirus for a few years without any problems. As for firewalls, used to use Zonealarm, but now use Comodo.

Filehippo.com has pretty much all the free downloads you could ever need - saves Googling all the time.

Interesting. It says

"Your system has achieved a perfect "TruStealth" rating. Not a single packet — solicited or otherwise — was received from your system as a result of our security probing tests. Your system ignored and refused to reply to repeated Pings (ICMP Echo Requests). From the standpoint of the passing probes of any hacker, this machine does not exist on the Internet. Some questionable personal security systems expose their users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing themselves. But your system wisely remained silent in every way. Very nice."

which I imagine is a good thing.

I have noticed zone alarm takes ages to load up when booting up . Does it really slow things down when running as compared to other firewalls?
