The camera has worked in reducing the number of accidents on the A48 in Caerwent but each time it is vandalised and put out of action, all road users are put at risk.
Don't these people understand what they are doing?

Idiots,

.>>>>The camera on the A48 in Caerwent in Monmouthshire was installed on the stretch of road in 2002 after a series of accidents including one fatal.

>>>>Between 1998 and 2000, one person died and seven others received serious injuries in collisions with 10 other people suffering injuries from other collisions.
A speed camera was installed and campaigners have said it has cut the number of crashes with just one collision resulting in slight injures.

Bet they'll be proud if someone now dies there.

Similar thing happened just down the road from me by j13 of the m5, there was a number of VERY serious accidents at the junction, the camera then went up and nothing for 5 years, the camera was then destroyed, 1 week later and the road was shut because of an accident there!

It wasn't hidden, you could easily see it in both directions

And they say they don't work!!

Yeah, there are some that aren't needed, at least pick the right ones!

That stretch wasn't on the list of the UK's most dangerous road stretches so those figures can't be priority material, and there's no indication the one fatac and injuries were caused by exceeding the limit. There's also no indication that a camera there or anywhere has done or will do any good.

The authorities are temporarily deprived of some speed tax and someone has engaged in criminal damage. Should displace 'dog bites man' from the international news headlines.

Unless I'm misreading this, what happened between 2000 and 2002?

Do you have any details of the accident? Was there really no collisions for 5 years? What's the name of the road please?

They won't stop lying will they? Still, it's their only means of making a living, so they're hardly likely to say anything else.

But you do not know what caused this accident either. The chance coinicidences which led to it occurring could have happened even if the camera was there.

Most of these cams are not sited at the actual scene.. but about 1 - 2 km distant from the incidents which lead the prats to think a cam will solve the "problem road"

All that happen ist that accident still occur on the "problem road" up to 2- 5 km distant from scam.. und people only slow at cam point... hitting the brakes und then back to 38 mph. rolleyes I know this because they all overtake me at my 27-32 mph fluctuates on these urbans. rolleyes und the incidents.. which incidentally almost always occur as result of the illegal chavs in stolen or pool throwaways picked up at auction for £60 with no questions asked. rolleyes Always another one if police trash the potential death trap after all banghead

For all you know .. one such muppet could have caused this smash.. so it still does nto follow that a scam "works such magic" rolleyes

who me ?

And there was silly old me thinking that they placed cameras where we (the SCP) COULD MAKE MOST MONEY .......rofl

I live just down the road from this camera site and in fairness its actually a pretty dodgy section of road that its on. There is a fast 60 mph single carridge road which then becomes a fast dual for about 1/2 mile at the end of whch the road returns to single carridge *and* there is a busy junction from the housing estate with no traffic signals or roundabout etc. Before the camera went up There were plenty of skid marks in the summer so it must see some action at the junction.

The limit reduces from 60 > 50 about 300m before the junction and then returns to 60 after it. Cars regularly overtake me at 80mph + and doing 100 + is not a problem along there......

I actually think the permanent cameras are the best of the bad options when you consider the scatter gun mobile vans we also have in South Wales.

Dave, so the camera was close to the junction and slowed some drivers in one direction?

Presumably collisions at the junction was the justification for the camera, but surely better to address that problem at it's root than simply place a camera there? A liitle money spent on road engineering could make that junction safe and prevent drivers overtaking across the face of the junction.

And as always, a robotic tax collector will be installed with no thought of actually looking at what creates and 'black spot' and removing it... ooops, no, that would be too easy!

what creats the problem junction is idiots who dont think when crossing or cant judge a cars approach speed and the road and folk who approach the junction along a very potentially fast section of road ( in the old days you could easily do 100mph along there I guess) not being aware of the cars about to pull out .

also you cant realy see the cars that wish to pull out of the junction that easily, as it is on a slope falling away from the main carridgeway.

There isnt much overtaking past the junction as there are already chevrons and a box in the middle of the road at the end of the dual carridgeway plus the reduced speed limit from 60 > 50mph

you would have to be an idiot to not see the camera ........torble is you will probably be looking in youir mirror at the camera and crash into the car pulling out of the junction laugh

here is a photo of the junction.

the camera is not where the red circle is . The camera is on the south side of the road just after the Cwrt Morgan road.

Looks like quite a sensible place for the camera - couple of hundred yards before the problem junction, at the end of the DC stretch - slow down the drivers at the end of the DC, then once past the camera they look up and spot a junction in time to take action and not be distracted.

Much as I despise GATSO's, that's probably one of the more sensible ones...

It sounds like a road layout fault. Fix the road and you save everyone. Add a camera, people will still die but money is made.

I fail to see why blackspots are such a mystery. The very fact that they ARE blackspots means there is something unusually dangerous about the road layout. Perhaps instead of dumb people doing road planning, we as a country ought to treat it as a professional subject like architecture. If councils stopped taking the brown envelopes and started fixing all of their blackspots, their own family and friends would be safer too. As they don't, I'll just have to assume they are merely idiots, as the alternative is not pretty.

Perhaps a VAS might be more effective .. und in each direction too. These do focus driver attention more on road und their speed of approach.

Sister-in-law tell us of a trio of these each direction along her route to work. She say they appear to be very effective. about 200 yard from the school (each direction) - she say it flashes the speed limit und a scam symbol. They had a van there twice before Manchester Prats erected the VAS (und bow to them for sense) und the other two warn of sharp bends with reminder of speed limit. It seems to be working per sister-in-law who says she was many a dodgy overtake on the route prior to these.

Bravo to Manchester prats on this one. bow
