i read this one on here the other day, must say i have had no problems even with my wired or wifi connection..........................until this morning booted up modem(ethernet/safecom)just kept trying to connect, even after rebooting twice, looked next door saw lights on turned off connected instantly,i have never had problem like this before although the misses as changed the lights this year, once connected everything is fine even when lights on,the give away was when you put the lights on the phone line as background hissing sound, turn lights off sound as gone, this obviously is a problem when trying to connect to my ISP,but the hissing sound slows the connection once online if the lights are switched on again, sounds untrue but i speak as i find, those pesky lights mess up your phoneline signal (noisy)not good for your b/band .

That sounds like somethings arcing, and if it's arcing enough to cause a hiss on the phone line it's arcing enough to get hot, and catch fire.

nothings arcing, there brand new, nothing is warm plug, wires, anything, although the outside phone line is as old as the property copper wires as well.thanks mattley for the concern.

Could the lights be broadcasting crap that the phone line is echoing?

Christmas lights are a well known source of interference on phone lines, in short they are a bloody nightmare.

Ask your neighbours if they will move them away from the incoming phone line.

A relation of ours found exactly the same problem. After plugging the lights into another socket the internet worked OK.
Perhaps it is a problem of switchmode PSUs?

its just poor shielding on some cheap PSUs - Ive seen it a few times before with various devices when plugged in near the router etc...

just like a PSU at work that makes a screen 1m away flicker like hell lol think it's Q-tek PSU.

Always end up with faulty stuff in IT workshops but we live with it we give out all the decent stuff lol

Can't grumble as my manager brought all 15 of us 4GB iPod nano's for Christmas

Why is that then? These lights are nothing more than a resistive circuit, what could cause any form of electromagnetic inteference without arcing? Could flashing pattern type boxes cause this?

I feel all confused and ignorant now :?

My parents tree is right beside the TV. With the lights on, they cause interference across all channels!

Interesting thread, we've been at my Dad's for Christmas and his phone line was dreadful - at times it was barely useable as there was so much noise on it but at othertimes it was OK. OH took all the phone sockets apart and fiddled with the wiring the other morning, seemed OK, tried it later and it was back to being crap again!

After lots of fiddling around it turns out to be the rope light he's got round the front of the house, I think it's next to where the phone line comes into the house.

Sadly, he's still on dial up so I hadn't seen the thread......
