Okay, since selling CoD2 (and havent gotten around to buying 3 yet) I am missing a nice FPS game...

Now, I've heard a lot of good things on here about Gears Of War, but can't get a demo to try it - whats the single player like? and what about the online multiplayer? Can you do a split screen 2 player?

I downloaded the Rainbow 6 Vegas demos yesterday - and was very impressed, although the last TC game I had was splinter cell, and I found that it was very frustrating for single player, and i can see the same might be true for Vegas, although the online demo is a lot of fun...

So, can anyone reccomend which to go for?

If only the one, then GOW without a shadow of a doubt.
R6LV is decent, but nowhere near the GOW entertainment level.

I am loving the single player side of R6V.
Imho it makes the single player GOW experience seem bland if you want a more
real world experience.

In GOW single player i found myself shooting some stuff from behind a concrete
block, moving on, shooting more stuff from behind a block, moving on, getting annoyed at
my men for doing silly things, shooting some stuff from behind a block, moving on.....
You get the point anyway. It has nice touches but all the cool diving and leaping around stuff
or lobbing grenades from cover, i hardly used at all.
I did enjoy it though, but that was really all it offered.

R6 Vegas however forces you to think and often act fast if you want to live and are in a fix.
You can hear voices behind a door for example. You slip a camera under that door to check it out.
You see 3 or 4 guys inside who talk as though they are about to kill some hostages.
At this point you could try kicking in or blowing off the door and try to shoot them real quick.
You could throw in smoke, flick on your thermal goggles so you can still see and pick them off.
Maybe you want to flashbang them and attack? Maybe you can sniper them from afar, rush in with a shot
gun or set any of your guns fire rate to avoid the risk to hostages.
You could also wait by another entry point (window/ladder/another door) and order your men
to do any of the above at another door and even tell them who to kill first and second etc.
Alternatively, so you don't get flanked etc, you can order your men to wait in a certain area with
"weapons free" or a much more quiet "only shoot back when they shoot at you!" mode.
They will even add a silencer to their guns if you wish.
Again, you get the point.

Being pinned down and shot at with car windows and various other bits and bobs exploding around you
while you pop out from cover to shoot, lob grenades over obstacles, aim just your gun around an object
to fire wildy or throw some smoke so you can go and heal your downed team mate is a joy!
It all feels so natural too after a short time once you are used to the controls.

That said, for some strange reason i found the multiplayer a bit boring in R6.I'm not sure why exactly as it should
be fantastic.I think maybe it was due to their being too many chiefs and not enough Indians so to speak.
The single player experience made me feel in charge of our destiny at all times and you took things at your own pace
in a sense.Multiplayer felt like i was along for the ride no matter what we wanted to do maybe.
GOW however in multiplayer felt much more like counter strike in it's approach.
Namely that you could still run in all guns blazing and save the day if you wish and no matter what
tactics your team were using, they would still appreciate your efforts.
Due to the level design it all feels a lot more arena based in GOW.It all feels like full on, quick fix gaming
mayhem with dollops of tactics added on should you wish to use them.

It really will depends what you want from a "game".
Both entertain superbly and i think ultimately you need both on your shelf because they
offer different experiences.
